Our #GoodBrickAward winners series continues! @theriveroakstheatre is being recognized for its thoughtful rehabilitation, bringing Houston’s oldest historic suburban movie theater back to life while honoring its Streamline Moderne design and cinematic legacy. Built in 1939, the #RiverOaksTheatre is one of the last remaining historic cinemas in Houston still operating as a theater, even as many of its peers have been lost or adapted for other uses. The recent restoration carefully repaired and restored character-defining features, from the iconic boomerang marquee and neon signage to terrazzo flooring, porcelain enamel panels, and interior details designed by artist Buck Winn Jr. Modern systems and accessibility improvements were sensitively integrated, ensuring the theatre can continue welcoming audiences for generations to come. Reopened to the public in 2024 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, River Oaks Theatre once again serves as a vibrant cultural anchor, screening independent and classic films and hosting live performances, just as it was intended more than 80 years ago. To see the complete list of 2026 Good Brick Award winners, please visit: preservationhouston.org/awards (link in bio).

During this special open house in Houston’s Near Northside, longtime owners Esther and Hugo Cantu Sr. welcomed guests inside and shared what has made this home so meaningful over the past 20+ years. From its historic details to the memories created within its walls, their hope is simple: that the next owners will care for it, appreciate it, and continue its story for years to come. Moments like this remind us that preservation isn’t just about buildings. It’s about the people who live in them, the stories they hold, and the care passed from one generation to the next. As we celebrate #PreservationMonth, we’re reminded that protecting historic places starts with connection, stewardship, and community. #preservationhouston #historichouston #homereno #homerestoration

As we celebrate #PreservationMonth with @savingplaces , we’re highlighting a few historic places in Houston and surrounding areas that continue to shape how we experience our communities today. From the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and 1910 Harris County Courthouse in Downtown Houston, to the charm of the McFaddin-Ward House Museum in Beaumont and the rich history of the Historic Downtown Galveston, these places remind us that preservation is about more than buildings — it’s about the stories, people, and moments they hold. Each place tells a story worth protecting and together, they reflect the cultural fabric of our state. What’s a historic place in Texas whose architecture you admire?

Our #GoodBrickAward features continue! Preservation Houston is proud to recognize Ben Koush and Kathryn O’Rourke for their book Home, Heat, Money, God. Rooted in decades of architectural documentation, the book reframes how we understand Texas’s modern built environment — connecting everyday buildings, from schools and houses to churches and cultural institutions, to the social forces that shaped them. With Houston at its core, Home, Heat, Money, God offers an accessible and compelling lens on modern architecture, serving as both a resource for preservation advocacy and a deeper understanding of the places we often overlook. Fun Fact: Approximately 17% of the buildings featured in the book are located in Harris County, underscoring Houston’s outsized role in shaping modern architecture across Texas. Projects like this expand how we define preservation — not only saving places, but helping us see their meaning more clearly. To see the complete list of 2026 Good Brick Award winners, visit the link in bio.

Happy #EarthDay! 🌍 Environmental progress is built through everyday action in our communities. Clean air, safe water, and climate resilience aren’t optional, they’re essential. Preservation plays a role in that progress. Reusing and restoring existing buildings reduces waste, conserves resources, and supports more sustainable communities. At Preservation Houston, we believe small, consistent actions like protecting the places that already exist, add up to lasting change. Across Houston, these places show how environmental progress and preservation work together! 📸: Buffalo Bayou Park, Hermann Park, Memorial Park & Houston Botanic Garden #PreservationHouston #Sustainability #HistoricPreservation #HoustonArchitecture
