What a night at Bar Madonna! 🍸 This week, Preservation Houston’s next-gen community @pierbeam gathered inside @themarlene_htx for great drinks, meaningful conversation, and a closer look at one of Houston’s preservation success stories. Guests heard directly from owner Lily Barfield, who shared insights into the thoughtful renovation process behind The Marlene, now proudly recognized as a 2026 #GoodBrickAward winner! 🏆 Tucked inside this beautifully restored landmark, Bar Madonna offered the perfect setting for connecting with fellow Houston history lovers and celebrating how historic spaces can be reimagined for today while honoring their past. 📸 Built in 1910, The Marlene is a Neoclassical gem that has served many lives over more than a century, from private home to boarding house, antique store, and bed and breakfast. Today, its history isn’t just preserved, it’s experienced. . . . #preservationhouston #preshou #houstonhistory

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this month’s all-member happy hour! 🍹 We had a great evening of conversation, cocktails, and community at @volcanohouston . A special thank-you to Pete Mitchell, the bar’s owner, for sharing a bit of the history behind this iconic neighborhood spot, open since 1989. The one-story building near Rice Village began as an ice house in the 1940s, later became Munchies Café, and has housed Volcano since 1989. The bar takes its name from Under the Volcano, Malcolm Lowry’s 1947 novel set in Mexico on the Day of the Dead. Inspired by that story, the owners filled the space with art, décor and furniture purchased in Mexico, giving the bar its distinctive personality. We love gathering with Preservation Houston and @pierbeam members, longtime friends and new faces alike, to celebrate Houston’s history together. Stay tuned for our next happy hour! #PreservationHouston #HoustonNetworking #houstontx

Join Pier & Beam Saturday morning, August 2 for a special volunteer day at Clemente Martinez Elementary School, where we’ll be helping clean and prep the school’s Mindfulness Garden — a new outdoor classroom in the heart of the Near Northside. We’ll get started early to avoid the heat and plan to finish by noon. You’re welcome to arrive late or leave early. You’ll be working alongside other Pier & Beamers and @hopestoneinc , a local nonprofit that brings arts education and emotional intelligence programming to underserved students. The garden will soon host weekly classes in everything from seed starting and pollinator plants to self-regulation and creative expression — and your help will make sure it’s ready. WHERE TO GO: 901 Hays Street. Park along Bigelow Street and enter through the chain link gate at Bigelow and Gett streets, which leads to the garden behind the school. The gate stays closed, so you may need to text or call a friend who’s already inside if you arrive after 7:30. WHAT TO BRING: Bring water, sunscreen and bug spray, and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. There’ll be some tools on site, but feel free to bring your own gardening gloves or tools if you have them.

Join Pier & Beam on Wednesday, July 23, for a special evening in the Near Northside, one of Houston’s most storied neighborhoods and home to a remarkable mix of historic houses, industrial architecture and evolving cultural identity. We’ll kick things off with an open house at 1920 Fulton Street, a creatively reimagined house built around 1899 in the historic A.C. Allen Addition. Around 6:20 p.m. we’ll hear from Rebecca Reyna, executive director of the Greater Northside Management District, about the past, present and future of this resilient neighborhood. At 7 p.m. we’ll head to @badastronautbrewing , which is housed in a 1920s building that’s been everything from a WWII-era defense school to a Venetian blind factory. Today it’s one of Houston’s most popular new breweries — the perfect spot to enjoy a drink and connect with your fellow Pier & Beamers. This event is open to Pier & Beam members and their guests. Free street parking is available in the neighborhood. No RSVP is required.
