If you've known me long, you'll know I began this creative journey doing self portrait shoots. Always incorporating desi elements in non-traditional ways, duhh (it wasn't a phase mom). I didn't really know where I was going (still don't lol). I've just always interacted with the world through fashion, it guides my curiosity, my learning, my creativity. Fashion is political, cultural, psychological, historical, artistic, mathematical, spiritual (I could go on forever). I think it's incredibly underestimated and requires great knowledge to understand.
So it only felt right to start this next chapter of Jugni with a self portrait shoot concept that I've been sitting on for a LONG time! In true Jugni fashion (ha), I embodied my bold, feminine side to challenge the myth that "modesty" in the form of concealing women's bodies is indigenous to South Asians. The idea that women's nudity is some kind of moral failing is a foreign import brought to us through colonization (shocker).
In the first episode, I dive deep into the history of toplessness in South Asia. Tracing how we as a society went from worshipping women's bodies to shaming, objectifying and policing them. And guys lemme tellya, I learned a lot (hard t). I can't wait for you all to hear it!!
