We are grateful to Speaker Shekarchi for his unwavering leadership and commitment to protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care for all people in Rhode Island through the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act (2023) and the Health Care Provider Shield Act (2024), as well as the Reproductive Privacy Act (2019).
Under Speaker Shekarchi's leadership, Rhode Island has become a leading state for reproductive freedom; we are so thankful for Speaker Shekarchi's partnership and support.
Tonight, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked a lower court order that restricted mifepristone access while a federal lawsuit continues. While the Supreme Court did the bare minimum today, this case is not over. Access to mifepristone is still at risk, even in states where abortion is legal and protected, like Rhode Island. We will never stop fighting to make sure that everyone can get the care they need, when and where they need it.
