Meet Chastidy Vasconez, POT’s American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter and teacher of our new ASL Ceramics workshop! A part of our mission to improve accessibility in ceramics, this new class is taught in ASL and for anyone with ASL experience, including people who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing participants who know at least know basic ASL. You don’t have to be fluent, the workshop will be taught in ASL but spoken English translation will be available upon request. You can also request Chastidy to interpret in our classes and private parties 💚 We hope to make this workshop recurring with enough interest, so please share and help spread word! ☀️ Sat. Let’s learn ancient crafts to counter brain rot. Next up: pottery. . One of the most accessible crafts to get started with, but also one of the oldest. . Thank you to Vanndearlyn and Angel at @pot_studio_la for letting me learn and document this process. Their work carries on traditional Khmer ceramic techniques passed down through generations. Go check out their work! . Pottery dates back over 20,000 years, developing independently across cultures around the world as a way to store, cook, and shape daily life. . Key terms: Pinch pot: a hand-building technique where clay is shaped into a bowl using your fingers. Slip: watered-down clay used like a glue to join pieces. Score: scratching the surface of clay to help pieces stick together. Kiln: a high-temperature oven used to harden clay into ceramic. Clay types: earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, each with different strength and firing temperatures. Glaze: a glass-like coating applied before firing to add color and make pottery waterproof. Kbach (Khmer: ក្បាច់): traditional decorative motifs used in Cambodian art and architecture. . This is just a basic introduction. Today is Sizdah Bedar, the thirteenth and final day of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year and Spring Equinox. This year's Nowruz holds added significance for many, especially in the midst of war with Iran. We caught up with members of LA's Iranian community at POT Studio's third annual POT Bazaar and asked them about their experiences observing Nowruz traditions during this time. 📹 by @snaccmanjones
