👹✨ 3 weeks ago I finished my final VFX project for university and it’s as close to photorealism that I could achieve within a year 🚀 I shot this at the end of my road in Cornwall using my mirrorless camera. All self taught only had lessons once a week on Friday for 2 hours but I didn’t let that stop me. I’m Predicted a 1st and rightly so! Easily spent 200 hours on this project if not more. This was inspired by Stranger Things, ‘Demogorgan’. I sculpted in Zbrush, textured in Substance Painter, and retopologised, rigged & animated in Maya. I tracked this in 3D Equalizer. Match-Moved this in Maya with help from my @polycam3d scan using the #iphone15promax I then captured my HDRI with a Theta 360, and finished with a Houdini Vellum Simulation. 🚀 My VFX Journey: A Year with 3D Equalizer 🌟
This past year, I dived deep into 3D Equalizer, on my teachers’ recommendation, to jumpstart my VFX career. Fast forward to now, and I’ve learned that many VFX houses outsource this work to India. Don’t get me started on this! 😭😭
However, the skills I’ve gained are invaluable. From mastering Matchmove and Layout with lens distortion grids and 3D scans, to nailing merged AOV workflows in Nuke and compositing techniques, it’s been a transformative journey. 📽️✨
In Maya, I tackled the challenge of scaling scenes and cameras by reparenting – a tough one to crack but incredibly rewarding. Every step was a learning curve, but it made me a better artist. 🌐🎨
