Our Patron, Hugh Grant, asks @jonathanhaidt - what is the motive of EdTech companies? Is it the same as BigTech who are interested in data - the data of our children and their parents. EdTech companies have the same business model as BigTech. This is fundamentally at odds with child development*. Education should be about learning and preparing children for an ever-changing world, to build skills they can carry into new and unpredictable situations. Education shouldn’t be about data or time on device. Research by Internet Safety Labs reveals that 96% of school apps** send student data to third parties; 78% is sent to advertisers and data analytics entities, all typically without the knowledge or consent of the student or school. These shocking results are from apps used in US educational settings. Is UK student data being entered to third parties too? Like many of us, actor Hugh Grant finds the mere presence of a smartphone or ipad a distraction. This is backed up by the science. There is ample evidence that shows laptops distract students and decrease their learning. Worse still, if a student is sitting beside someone on a laptop, they will also be distracted. The research shows that those neighbouring peers, without a laptop, scored significantly lower on comprehension tests. Students know this to be true. In one study, “other people’s laptop use” was reported more than any other type of distraction, constituting 64% of all responses, and was significantly greater than all other distractions combined including students’ talking, entering and leaving the classroom during class and fidgeting. Our children’s brains are being rewired. Study after study has shown that the more time children spend on smartphones (especially social media), the worse the physical and emotional consequences. In their own homes, children have seen pornography and can buy illegal drugs. These social media platforms can be accessed on ipads or Chromebooks in school which is a safeguarding issue. Even when we remove social media from the equation, when we KNOW that screens are an inferior way to learn, why are schools requiring them for learning? How much do schools spend on these devices? What is the motive from EdTech companies for ‘good deals’? Wouldn’t it be better spending the money on teachers? @jonathanhaidt advises simple rules: no 1:1 devices in the classroom (except computer labs or accommodations). His advice is delay, delay, delay.
