It is a responsibility to take up a banner! We are excited to share our experience working with @postcarbonlab to unlock the mysteries of colours from algae. It has been a humbling experience to understand the amazing ways nature works around us. We are now in the second phase of the project, promoted by the @ual_ftti and the British Council, to take this innovation towards the possibility of bulk dyeing using algae and natural resources working together. We’re also in the process of setting up a small sampling unit in London, so we can continue the experiments and sampling in the time to come. We are very positive about the results the future holds. A vibrant exchange of tradition and innovation – right in the heart of London! 🇬🇧🌿 We recently had the pleasure of conducting a hands-on workshop, featuring painting, block printing, and dyeing – all utilizing natural dyes. This was a collaborative effort by the teams of @colorashramfoundation , @truetoneink and @postcarbonlab . What made this experience truly special was the presence of renowned designers and industry leaders who not only shared their insightful perspectives but also appreciated the depth and potential of our work. Many expressed interest in collaborating further to bring these traditional yet sustainable practices to a wider market. One of the most exciting parts of the session was the discussion around the global potential of algae-based colors – an innovation rooted in nature and aligned with the future of conscious design. We're grateful for the energy, curiosity, and support this community brought to the space. What does the future of fashion feel like? Soft like plant-based fur. Clever like beer-waste textiles. Alive like photosynthesising clothes. And circular, down to the last drop of ink. From olive leather to microbial dyes, I explored over 10,000 next-gen materials at the world’s biggest sustainable fashion expo by @thesustainableangle and these are a few that truly shifted something in me. 💚 @savian.bio – the first fully plant-based fur. 🍺 @arda.biomaterials – turning beer waste into fabric. 🌱 @growink_ – living ink made from fungi & bacteria. 🌿 @postcarbonlab – clothes that breathe CO₂ back into oxygen. 🫒 @oleatex – luxury vegan leather from olive waste. Fashion that is cruelty-free, climate-smart, bio-based, and built to return to the earth. It’s not fast. It’s not wasteful. 🌱 The Sustainable Angle #FutureFabricsExpo reflections + Women in Innovation: Purple Plaque unveiling celebration announcement & event at LCF 🟣 As part of my personal and professional long-term relationship with Sustainable Angle, I was delighted to speak at their most recent 2024 Future Fabrics Expo Seminar Series in London. Joining me on the panel were the incredible Lucy Shea, Sarah Kent and Shailja Dube. The Expo has long been a vital marker in the calendar of designers, journalists, students, tutors, sector leaders and other creatives, but this year, it broke new ground. It changes what sourcing means in fashion, and it changes what it means to source, design and make. I am super proud that, each year, I see what our graduates from MA Fashion Futures are shaping and the change that they are leading. The discussion, the stands, the conversations and the energy at the Expo marked a move from awareness raising to the challenging, necessary, vital work of imagining otherwise than propping up the status quo of fashion as consumption, extraction and exploitation. This time, I was especially delighted to catch up with one of our @ma_fashionfutures graduates and @sustfash @kering_official award winners, Dian-Jen Lin (left), who formed, co-founded and is CEO of @postcarbonlab and Namrata (right) who is working with her. Dj is, very aptly, a Women in Innovation Awardee, receiving a Purple Plaque from Innovate UK to recognise the groundbreaking work that she is doing. Post Carbon Lab is a biotech company offering circular & regenerative microbial colouration and finishing services to textile and polymer supply chains. Dj’s work is a brilliant example of the future of fashion - post-carbon, post-consumerism, post-exploitation fashion.
