It’s been quiet because I’ve been in the work. Private & obsessive. Making this music mostly alone, a serious privilege. Have held onto many songs for years. Toured with incredible bands but never had one to call my own. That’s about to change.
I’m releasing one soon :) A dancefloor ballad for a friend who left without a goodbye. For this the studio became a lonely séance, grief turned into a groove straight out of the Hacienda of Manchester lore in an effort to summon my friend back, if only for a dance and some laughs. I’ve held it back not out of some weird strategy, but reverence. Find this sweet release soon 🖤
Recently I’ve traveled through New York City for close friends and music, across West Texas to be with family, and most recently into Cuba, serving as an official translator on a scientific expedition alongside bat biologists, forensic scientists, paleontologists, cave experts, marine biologists, and meteorologists. I witnessed the rigor and brilliance of a people under severe political constraint. To observe a society structured by control is to understand something universal: totalitarianism is fear formalized, insecurity made administrative, an attempt to dominate imagination. And yet what moved me most was the dignity of the people, their warmth, their refusal to grant despair the last word. When I left I found myself emotional, they kindly told me “there are no goodbyes, only see you soons.”That sentence felt like the purest form of resistance as I fought back tears.
Right now I am elated to be headed to Paris to work with my longtime friends from
@la_femme__musique on new Possessions singles. This world truly seems to crack and recombine at once; it grows smaller revealing wilder details, more beautiful even as it burns.
If I believe anything, it’s this: create.
Creation is the quietest, most durable form of insurrection. When systems narrow the mind, imagination expands it. When fear seeks obedience, art practices freedom. May you remain sovereign over your inner life and defiant through creation forever. Thanks for listening and thanks to my friends and family.
Love, -H
