A major moment for UK podcasting ⚡
For the first time, podcast and audio publishing activities will be formally recognised in the UK SIC 2026 framework.
@weareaudiouk played a key role in securing this change, working closely with the @dcmsgovuk , the Office for National Statistics and the BBC to advocate for accurate and representative classification of the sector.
Better classification means better visibility. Better visibility means a stronger case for support, funding and recognition.

The Big Stink: July, 1858
How much do you know about one of London's smelliest mysteries?
1️⃣ The heat made the Thames behave like a giant open drain left in the sun
The crisis hit during a hot, dry summer in 1858. Records show June 16th as the hottest recorded day of the year up to that point, reaching 34°C in the shade. With river levels low, raw sewage sat on the exposed banks and effectively baked.
2️⃣ Parliament tried to fight the smell with soaked curtains
During the worst of the stink, MPs had curtains at the Houses of Parliament soaked in chloride of lime to mask the fumes from the Thames. It is a brilliant visual: grand Victorian politicians hiding behind disinfected curtains because the river outside had become unbearable.
3️⃣ The official “quick fix” was to pour chemicals into the problem
Before Bazalgette’s sewer system solved the cause, authorities tried to reduce the smell by using chalk lime, chloride of lime and carbolic acid in the river. At the height of the stink, workers were spreading lime around sewer mouths and the Thames foreshore at low tide, reportedly costing £1,500 a week.
4️⃣ London had around 200,000 cesspits before the sewer rebuild
By the mid-1850s, London had about 200,000 cesspits and 360 sewers, many leaky or inadequate. Flushing toilets made things worse because they pushed more waste and water into a system that often emptied straight into the Thames.
5️⃣ The sewer scheme helped create the Victoria, Chelsea and Albert Embankments
Bazalgette’s answer cleverly hid major new sewers inside them and also worked as flood defences. Historic England notes that this changed the riverfront permanently, demolishing stretches of older waterfront communities, wharves and buildings in the process.
Winning an award for our mountain climbing and charity exploits obviously means these exploits must continue this year.
So the question is: what challenge should we attempt next?

After winning an award at the BBC last year, knocking it off a table and chipping it, whilst flailing my arms around in excitement to I’M SO FANCY by Iggy Azalea, I assumed the prosecco tipped down my top on the first sip meant we were on for a win.
But we came second. Should have done both boobs.
Had a fab evening and are fancy M & S mixed nuts for our tea on the way home.
