When I lost my mom last December, I told myself that any future hardship would be a lot more manageable because of the resiliency I was forced to develop during a time of crisis. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I simply formulated a variation of “what doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger”. I also know that these sayings persist because in times of grief, the loss seems to outweigh the wins we experience in our lives. What else can we do other than to imagine ourselves more capable than we are now?
Our greatest pressure and our greatest fear has happened to someone else we love. Although we have learned we cannot protect and care for everyone on our own, it is still difficult to let go of that feeling and responsibility.
There wasn’t a time when we asked Elise for support or to share adventure and life moments and she didn’t show up at every level. Today we are savoring those moments we had with her that were overflowing with joy and laughter. These moments are so extremely precious that I can’t help but to attempt to recall every detail.
Last year, right after Elise’s birthday we took a hike that was meant to be all of 45 minutes. We hit a trail that I expected to be more maintained and we had to wade through so much mud that the short hike quickly tripled. Feeling regret for not taking a shorter route, I was in front the entire time making sure I chose the safest path across the streams, tree stumps, and tall grass. A few months later, when we were celebrating Torie’s birthday, Elise and I confessed to each other how we never cleaned our muddy shoes from that day. I will take a hike in these muddy shoes with Torie today, and we will continue celebrating Elise for the rest of our lives.
When @hazelrmagnolia asked Elise "how do you want to be remembered”, Elise said "I want to be remembered for my advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community and for my kind spirit. I want to be remembered first and foremost by my community and then by society at large.”
Today, your adorable laugh and humor will get us through.
We wish you all time, space and energy for connection, love and joy.
