ARCHIVE of the LONG NOW @ue.germany exhibition opening this Thursday at 5 pm at the UE Gallery >>> The long now is geological, or the length of a breath. It includes that which came before, and that which comes next. It reaches to the edges of our memory and imagination. The long now carries our presence and the invitation to shape the moment with humanity and collective intention. This speculative installation draws inspiration from Stewart Brand’s Clock of the Long Now (01999) and from workshops on collective imagination, archeo-acoustics, and material and archetypes.   Curated by Prof. Emily Smith @emilysmithberlin with CD and NMD students of the Speculative Futures seminar.  Workshops led by Susan Ploetz @ploetzly , Omar elKammar @omar_elkammar , and Kshitija Kiran Gurav @kshitija.gurav #longnow #speculativefutures #uegermany #exhibition #newmedia #communicationdesign #deeptime #stewartbrand #masters #clockofthelongnow

Speculative Futures larping workshop with artists and designer @ploetzly Susan Ploetz with MA students from Communication Design and New Media Design @ue.germany what is a LARP? Live action role playing. The “Sasanel” larp designed by Susan introduces a parallel world where inhabitants are in tune with their environment. Objects have powers and language is magic. Following somatic, world building and character development exercises, we”played” the larp — revealing a new way to imagine kinship with nature, complex rituals, and personal accountability. Here, the artifacts we imagined. Ultimately, we experienced a deep empathy with the environment, and a more complex understanding of entanglement. Thank you to all participants who trusted the process!

Im making devices that will "larp" with us when I run Skinship again at the end of June. This picture is of a temperature sensor that will trigger audio based on different data points. The device will be sensing and sounding the qualities they sense, as will the human participants.

A Scene from Senses of Security, run at Au Jus in November. This is from the second run, participants started by playing representatives from two countries where a river's changing shape created border conflicts and food insecurity. These types of role plays are fairly common place in the fields of international relations. But then we took a break for boundary exercises, care taking, and then embodying different relational roles including the river and the land (which is what they are doing in this photo). Then they went back into the diplomatic role play, perhaps with a different sense of themselves and the other beings across (and including) the river.
