Choosing the right handpan scale can feel like a bit of a shot in the dark. To make that choice a little clearer, today we are launching a new series at Planet Handpan.
This project has been quietly in development for a few months now. While some scale overviews are out there, the goal with this series was to step away from surface-level summaries and build the most thorough, complete deep-dives available anywhere. These are total breakdowns of the music theory, the physical geometry, and the emotional map of each layout, going significantly further than whats been done before.
In fact, these graphics are just the entry point. A massive, full-length article has been published on the Planet Handpan website that goes completely into the weeds, packed with even more technical data, and charts that couldn't possibly fit into a social media slide.
Our first deep-dive is all about the Kurd, the gold standard of the modern handpan world. Tons of other unique sound models are lined up for the coming weeks.

We get it, handpans are a massive investment. When you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to hunt for the lowest price possible just to see if you even like playing.
