It’s an honor to be among the many fabulous winning Indigenous Artist and the annual Indian Market. Many Ahos to all of the amazing friends who stopped by to visit and purchase in my booth. Today Plains Soul is in North Vancouver at the @seymourartgallery for the opening of the exhibition “Tāpis: A love letter to our Dog Kin,” which features my tuppie along with eight others. I created this work during a 20-week online apprenticeship co-hort with the incredible @metiscaron . Adele learned to make tuppies from the talented @beadyourartout and passed along her knowledge to me and four other Indigenous artists. Women would often make tuppies for their sweethearts, showing our love for family and our dogs.
Sled teams would put the tuppies on just before they reached a fort or camp, letting everyone know they were coming!
When the Canadian government began forcing us onto reserves, the RCMP killed our dogs in the tens of thousands, removing our ability to travel and breaking the hearts of many. Because so many dogs were lost the knowledge of how to make a tuppie was severely dwindling. We are so grateful to Velma and Adele and to the generosity of the @firstpeoplesculturalcouncil for helping us revitalize the practice of making tuppies! Chi miigwetch! And aho to the fabulous @jeffym333 for loaning me my model, Zwei the livestock guard dog! Much love to the other women in my co-hort; @jaimyy@deltadebdesigns@4sistermetisbeadwork .

Sometimes we need a lil break and it just comes your way when you least expect it! Ended up with some extra time with the younger grandsons over the weekend! Kept them busy shopping, farming, hiking, kite flying, and playing with trucks! Managed a couple hugs in there too. ♥️ Amazed by how much help they are & how smart they are!

Had a super fun whirlwind trip to some of the greats in our area last week! Began at noon on Thursday @westernheritagecenter to hear a talk about the Apsaalooke Chief Plenty Coup’s connections to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC. More than 100 years on his family has maintained the relationship as explained by Ellsworth Goes Ahead in an awesome lecture. The Center also the amazing Barstow Collection of Ledger Art on display right now. The place was packed! Fun lunch hour adventure followed by a run to Hardin to shuffle grandkids from school and a quick drive thru sun, sleet, snow and rain to the beautiful @thebrintonmuseum for their opening of ‘The Unfinished War: The Battle of the Little Big Horn in Native American Art’ . Saw lots of friends and heard @rhblakotaartist talk about her doll on display. Another big crowd and wonderful exhibition which includes loans from institutions across the United States.
Spent the night in Sheridan so we could hit the @ucrossfoundation Gallery opening talk @arts.sheridancollege of ‘Resilience’ by Curator @printmakingpapa and the other four artists taking part in the exhibit. We ran out of time to head out to see the show in person as we needed to get back to Hardin to shuffle grandkids from school by 3pm. But we will get there soon! The artists were inspiring! Highly recommend folks take the trip as all of the artists have created wonderfully unique works and it would be easy to catch @thebrintonmuseum & @ucrossfoundation in one day.
