Bathed by trees in the dense forest of Pemberton, British Columbia, the Passive House Forest Retreat by @starkarchitecture disappears quietly into its surroundings while opening itself toward dramatic views of Mount Currie on one side. Built within a clearing surrounded by mature woodland, the house was imagined as a private escape for clients seeking a highly sustainable home without sacrificing comfort or contemporary style and design. In the Berkeley Hills, where it takes in distant views of the San Francisco Bay, this mid-century home was recently reworked by @morkulnesarchitects. Originally designed by Roger Lee, an architect prolific in the 1950s and 60s across the Bay area, the gem of a home was carefully updated, with the new design balancing preservation with a lighter, more open approach to contemporary living. A house shaped by both landscape and memory, Moksha by @saw.inc is set in the rolling hills of Portola Valley, a small town in California. A prolonged project, tempered by the tragic passing of the commissioning clients (long term friends of the architects) during the building process, there is a great deal of sentiment and sensitivity rolled into the project. After 13 moves in 15 years, this Arlington, Virginia home — @ode_design_ 's sixth Arlington build, Pavillion House — was designed as studio architect Yuri Sagatov’s long-term family base and a testing ground for ideas. The brief was simple: create a place where the architect’s teenagers would want to hang out. The result? In a suburban pocket of Kobe, the hybrid home, studio, and business first had to navigate the site’s topographical challenges – namely, a dramatic slope that drops around five meters, plus a busy commercial street to one side. The response by the designer/owner @masatokawakami_ was to establish a pair of offset volumes, placed diagonally to negotiate both the slope and the character of the surroundings.
