In Paradise Valley, Arizona, @blankstudio completed Midnight Blue, a residence wrapped in deep blue-black terracotta that shifts between absorbing the desert sky and mirroring it back. Four volumes of varying heights step down from the tallest mass at the main living space, their dark glossy surfaces reflecting surrounding saguaros and sky, quietly folding the building into the landscape. Bathed by trees in the dense forest of Pemberton, British Columbia, the Passive House Forest Retreat by @starkarchitecture disappears quietly into its surroundings while opening itself toward dramatic views of Mount Currie on one side. Built within a clearing surrounded by mature woodland, the house was imagined as a private escape for clients seeking a highly sustainable home without sacrificing comfort or contemporary style and design. In the Berkeley Hills, where it takes in distant views of the San Francisco Bay, this mid-century home was recently reworked by @morkulnesarchitects . Originally designed by Roger Lee, an architect prolific in the 1950s and 60s across the Bay area, the gem of a home was carefully updated, with the new design balancing preservation with a lighter, more open approach to contemporary living. A house shaped by both landscape and memory, Moksha by @saw.inc is set in the rolling hills of Portola Valley, a small town in California. A prolonged project, tempered by the tragic passing of the commissioning clients (long term friends of the architects) during the building process, there is a great deal of sentiment and sensitivity rolled into the project. After 13 moves in 15 years, this Arlington, Virginia home — @ode_design_ 's sixth Arlington build, Pavillion House — was designed as studio architect Yuri Sagatov’s long-term family base and a testing ground for ideas. The brief was simple: create a place where the architect’s teenagers would want to hang out. The result? A home of four interconnected pavilions — kitchen, office, outdoor loggia, and a sunken conversation room — each with a bedroom above. Link in bio. 📸: @jenniferhughesphoto

Open cross sections define this seaside home in Anglesea, Australia, with doors sliding back to reveal panoramic ocean views right through the house. The work of @eckersley_architects , the two-storey Anglesea House takes its cues from the relaxed modernism of the area's historic mid-century coastal homes. As far as retreats go, Lake Kawaguchi Hut by Japanese studio @we_architect is the epitome of where we'd like to hunker down during the wintertime. Built on an undulating mountain plot near Japan's Lake Kawaguchi, this compact weekend villa follows and adapts to the topography instead of fighting it. In a suburban pocket of Kobe, the hybrid home, studio, and business first had to navigate the site’s topographical challenges – namely, a dramatic slope that drops around five meters, plus a busy commercial street to one side. The response by the designer/owner @masatokawakami_ was to establish a pair of offset volumes, placed diagonally to negotiate both the slope and the character of the surroundings. This move created two distinct outdoor spaces while subtly separating the building’s public and private areas. Link in bio for full feature. 📸: @takumiota

Perched on a rocky outcrop above Indian Arm, Bedrock House is a monument to the spirit of Modernism that runs up and down the west coast of Canada and the United States. Designed in 1977 as architect Ambrose Reoch’s own private home, the building embraces the drama of its North Shore setting, where it leaves the city behind and blurs into its surroundings of dense forest while offering views of the water. Visit @westcoastmodernhomes to tour the home, and the link in bio for our feature. 📸: @takenby_jh
