Book Review: The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas by PL Teen Volunteer M. Please note this book is recommended for 17+ The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas ★★★☆☆ This book is about a Spanish girl, Catalina who desperately needs to find a date for her sister's wedding. It started as a little white lie to her mum to prove she wasn’t lonely but now everyone is excited to meet this American boyfriend of hers. At first, when her colleague Aaron steps in she instantly refuses but as time is running out before the flight to Spain, he may be her only option. My favourite character is probably Hector, Catalina’s work colleague. This is because he is so kind and welcoming. The characters of the book felt real and the story was quite exciting. My favourite part of the book is probably the ending. I would say the genre of the book is romance. In some sections of the book, I was gripped and wanted to read more. What I disliked about the book was the cringey vibe I got from Lina and her best friend, Rosie. Usually, romances make me feel so warm inside but at most points, this book recoiled me and stopped me from wanting to read on. Furthermore, at the start of the book, Aaron is closed off and mean. However, then he goes through a massive change in character. I guess I just didn’t understand what allowed him to change up so quickly. Overall, I would say this book wasn’t for me but I feel that some people may really enjoy it. I would recommend this book for people 14+ as some scenes are inappropriate for younger audiences. If you are a fan of romance books I think you should give it a try. -M

Recommended Read: Maus by Art Spiegelman. The first and only graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize, MAUS is a brutally moving work of art about a Holocaust survivor -- and the son who survives him. “Maus is a masterpiece, and it's in the nature of such things to generate mysteries, and pose more questions than they answer. But if the notion of a canon means anything, Maus is there at the heart of it. Like all great stories, it tells us more about ourselves than we could ever suspect” - Philip Pullman 🟨 Let us know what you think of Maus in the comments!
