Here are a few biomaterial samples I made last year! Alginate based and coloured with spirulina! Biomaterials are fun to play with but I’m trying not to get too distracted by them in terms of big projects!! I’ll keep playing with biomaterials as part of the @thesame_lab stuff though!
The landscape of what I am up to has definitely been shifting. I’m going to be using this account to keep sharing more of my bioart process (which I hope you are enjoying, I love when people comment) and the @thesame_lab is metamorphosing as well! 🤭
Anything else you want to hear more about here?
A sun-ray fun quest in the long grass last summer.
I love the crispy mornings and sunny bluebird days this time of year. There is some combination of freshness and nostalgia to it. Extra crispy extra sparkly.

Imagine: a soft, flexible gill worn like a piece of jewelry. Philippa Beale’s Human Gills demonstrate how humanity and technology can merge to survive underwater.

I took almost no photos of my second @thesame_lab open studio event sponsored by @artsmnc because it was non-stop chit chat about algae, art, biology, bioreactors, capturing temporary moments, material, process and all things in between!
I think about fifty people came on a Rainey Valentine’s Day to share this event with me and I’m feeling very supported and happy! (And also in need of a nap). Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou to everyone who came! It’s really incredibly motivating what you can pull together with community support! 🩵💙💚💙🩵⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
Busy busy busy times lately and I need to remind myself to do all those other necessary things like rest and eat and play in the creek! Next round of experimentation is underway and behind it all a great deal of pondering what exactly I am making here and why. Thinking about the base uni of an image as a pixel in the digital world or as a cell in the living. The subtractive vs the additive processes that go into making something visible and I’m really looking forward to the second open studio event I’ll be hosting this Saturday!! Come and eat sushi and have a Bev with me! After that a proper nap and a holiday might be on the cards! 🐊💙🤞
I’ll be hosting the second in my summer series of @thesame_lab open studio events, supported by @artsmnc , on Valentine’s day! These are a peek behind the curtain at what bioart projects I have been working on!
I have been diving into making images using algae and who knows where this has taken me since the last event hehehehe 👀💚🌞! Come and fall in love with bioart experimental artefacts, eat some sushi, listen to some music, and have a chit chat and a bev while the sun goes down! Hope to see you there Xx
I made this algae biomaterial wall hanging for my @thesame_lab studio open event, supported by @artsmnc ,a few weeks ago and when @its_jade_bunny saw it we knew the perfect place for it to end up was @wattle_crescenthead ! It’s so incredible to bring something like this to life and to know it’s going to end up somewhere it will be adored!
From the microscopic to the cosmic the circle represents continuous cycles. Planetary orbits so monumental and delicate that life unfolds in the warm glow of a burning star! This artwork is made of algae based biomaterials and can be composted when its time is done!
I think there are many applications for this material I have been working with! HMU if you have an idea for a custom project!
I’ve been busy organising some space for my bioart experiments which are currently focussed on making living images using algae ! The project is ongoing but if you are interested in a peek behind the scenes I will be hosting two open studio events this summer supported by @artsmnc ! Working with living things means growth is a factor and if you come to both events you may even see the growth of this idea and subsequent artefacts from the experimentation.
So grateful to be one of the recipients of the CASP grants from @artsmnc and for this opportunity to meet behind the scenes with people interested in or curious about biology x art!
Can’t wait!

I DREAM DESIRABLE FUTURES AND MAKE LIVING ARTWORKS THAT BRING THESE IMAGININGS CLOSER TO REALITY BY MELDING BIOLOGY WITH TECHNOLOGY. I SPECULATE ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LIVING AND DON’T BELIEVE IN THE SEPARATION OF HUMANS AND NATURE. I LOVE SOFT EDGES, SMOOTH TRANSITIONS, BRIGHT COLOURS, AMBIGUITY, JOY, AND PLAY.
I like to swim in the zone of known unknowns, in science in technology in humanness, to create tangible in person experiences that are to be felt. To connect people with their oneness with nature, make them optimistically question what is possible, and to evoke the childlike wonder too many of us leave behind. 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

Another little #algae #bioart image test! I decided this test looked really cute so I make some more glass plates with algae grown in 3d printed wells! I will dry the algae and then set the little blob shapes in resin to try and preserve them. Chlorophyll likes to loose its colour so these may need to be recorded another way. It’s going to look so fun once I get all that aquarium silicone off the glass! This is a little side piece to the main star of the show - psyching myself up to a bigger algae image #bioreactor experiment! Can’t wait!
