PRINT SALE ! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øUtilitarianism. September 2017. I took this photograph three years ago whilst on a road trip up to Pendleton, stopping whenever and wherever the light or subject happened to take me, a freedom that unfortunately isn’t afforded us right now. In the meantime I’m honoured to have been asked to donate this and two other film photographs to help support out of work filmmakers through @keepgoing.world who are selling prints like this and loads of other fantastic work by many a talented cinematographer and director, take a look, help a fellow filmmaker and get some art, win-win! #wecandoit #filmsnotdead #printsale #keepgoing #california #missyouguys

šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§Jack Bevan Nov.8th 2018. Excited to finally share these wet plates shot at @gasproductionhire studios in Walthamstow last year. I’ve been lucky enough to have shot music videos for the @foals with @thisisnotdavema can’t believe it’s been over ten years since we shot ā€œOlympic Airwaysā€ in London. To have been asked by @ynnsphilippakis to shoot the band was nothing short of a dream come true. Can’t wait for the new album. 8x10 Wet Plate Collodion Aluminium Type. #largeformatcamera #largeformatphotography #wetplatecollodion #wetplatedarlings #foals #portraiture #portraitphotography #deardorff

šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø Venice Fastback. June 2022. Been sort of shooting a little street photography of late, not really, as I’m driving around with an 8x10 camera , same but slower and more expensive. Consequently I don’t shoot much but when i do, people are excited to see the camera, come up to have a chat, speedway has a vibe up that end, cool in the shade, hot in the sun, people walking dogs, the sound of flip flops and seagulls, the smell of sea salt , jazz cabbage and a little gasoline, drifters, tourists, locals , a really rich mix of humanity most days you float through. #mustang #fordmustang #venicebeach #kodake100 #8x10camera #8x10film #largeformatphotography #patina #beachlife #filmisbetter #drivevintage #classicsmagazine

They say the darkest hour is right before the dawn. Seems to be true from where I stand right now. If you too have suffered with your mental health and are quietly trying to hold it down by yourself, I beg of you to please ask for some help, ask someone you feel safe with or even better someone you love that you feel will understand, but just ask. You will be surprised just how many of us have also walked the same path and can share a way out of its maze. I believed I was getting by for so long I can’t even recall anymore when it actually started, this is it’s inherent danger as it’s onset is nearly imperceptible, you just continue to add coping mechanisms until you find yourself no longer being able to function, believing there is no way out and this is just how life has evolved for you. I assure you there’s so much more to life that I’m only just being able to perceive now, as if I’ve only just seen how each chess piece can be moved within the game of life. It’s quite difficult to explain a state of expanded cognitive function until you experience it, only to realise how you’ve been unknowingly restricted in life. Far more than just feeling happier than you have prior. Once again I’ve been shown I simply can’t do this thing we call life alone and why humans thrive better together. I’d like to thank all the people in my life who have shown me love and offered help and open hearted advice as when you’re within that darkness you simply cannot see the light. I’m very pleased to say after one month of anti depression medication despite a somewhat rough weaning on period I’ve now been gifted with enough clarity to see what I’ve been missing out on for so many years. Early days I know, yet very grateful to be feeling as I do right now. I’d like to give special thanks to one very exceptional human that against all odds still believed in me when I had long ago given up on myself. In doing so revealing to us both the unfathomable depth that love holds. A life lived till now comparatively within two dimensions only to be shown the experience and wonder of a life lived within three glorious dimensions.Onwards & Upwards ā¤ļø #life #love #light #filmphotography

Self Portrait 22.4.26 Self Portraiture as medicine . Not sure it’s worked this time as I’m in what’s been described to me as a weening on stage of antidepressants and I feel in a drowsy forgetful state of mind that has me losing things like my glasses so now I’m looking at the world through a scratched slightly soft filter and using this overly complicated process to distract my frustrated mind from a multitude of worries my fuzzy head can’t resolve just yet resulting in this just missed focus self portrait, tired, big bagged eyes and unkept human. In an attempt to normalise the truth and show something that is real, here I am late at night in my studio trying to put a pin in this moment in time so as to be able to move on from and hopefully look back on with understanding. Frustratingly I’ve woken to feel the same if not a little lower as all the problems weren’t able to be solved in my dreams last night and are still there and I don’t have the energy to try all the self help things my friends have shared on their healing journeys. Instead I just keep replaying this song as it seems to soothe through association, I love how music can do that, much like poetry and art in general, no one thinks about that until they find themselves on the rocks or in love. That’s all I got, this is my truth, potential self pity party somehow a micron lighter for sharing. Love, me. #selfportraitureasmedicine #largeformatfilm #artforartssake #shadow #sittinginit

Ezra Freeman 20.4.26. 8x10 Silver Gelatin contact print from 8x10 @ilfordphoto FP4 Negative. Yesterday @_ezra_freeman_ asked if today was a good day to take his portrait and within half an hour he was sitting before my 1950’s Deardorff camera as I started explaining the process of large format analogue photography. Two hours later I was scanning the negative and the next morning I was making a prints. It’s taken me longer than anticipated to complete @halfartstudio as I’ve never done anything like this before, and at times I wasn’t sure if I could and I’m still not sure if I can make a living from this but I’ll never know if I don’t give it a go. So thanks Ezra for inadvertently showing me my dream of making a studio to produce my own work and share this somewhat antiquated and nearly obsolete form of photography is complete, well, sort of, I’m not sure darkrooms and studios are ever really complete as there’s always some other piece of equipment you find yourself searching market place for to try another old process to make other types of photographic art and that’s fun too. I’m not sure why the world is in such a hurry to do less and have AI do more but I’m happily going in the opposite direction with @halfartstudio and slowing down to create handmade one off photographs that you can hold in your hand and will last for years and require no digital intervention whatsoever and it makes me really happy doing so and without exception every single person I share this process with loves it too and that brings it all full circle for me. If you don’t enjoy what you do and it doesn’t bring any joy for anyone else then how are you making this world a better place? #largeformatfilmphotography #darkroom #silvergelatin #filmportraits #8x10

Self Portrait 13.4.26. Mental health , the elephant in the room, living a human experience that rarely, if ever, seems to fit , seldom feeling comfortable in your own skin. Spending years perfecting a social suit of armour to protect one’s self from the outside worlds judgments and feel safe behind. I’ve spent years in denial of all this until recently when I walked myself into the mental health ward of my local hospital on the advice of someone very special to me and said I need help as I didn’t like the thoughts that were going through my head and right now all the things in my life I’m trying to hold aloft are simply too heavy and I must rest them down until I have a better understanding of what’s making life continually painful to endure. The simple act of walking through that door helped me more than the conversations I had with the psychiatrist inside. Our public health system leaves plenty of holes to be able to slip through and simply turn into a statistic, yet I’m grateful for its existence. There’s a freedom in no longer caring what other people think, if they find out or how it may affect me in the future both in my personal life or career, it seems more important to understanding this hidden dis-ease. This freedom allowed me to share with two friends I’ve known longer than anyone in my life, only to find I’m not alone in how I feel , this did help, yet this isn’t linear, this is different for everyone, this has no clear and defined cure, this only has other ears that are willing and able to listen IF you find the strength to share and all they can do is share their personal experience or education on the matter. Ironically many of those in the sphere of mental health enter that sphere to help themselves first and consequently others yet have the same fight to face swinging blindly with western medicines little pills that all have side effects and addiction risks and at best are the lesser of two evils. Regardless of all the alternative healings, pills, therapy or advice when push comes to shove you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink, that decision is for them alone. #mentalhealth #life #endofmytether #sicktodeathofthisshit

Artist @_fumika_saito_art_ at home with her art. March 2026. I still recall the conversation, not too long ago with Fumi at our local coffee shop when she first shared her love for and intent to paint. In my eyes it takes a lot of courage to be an artist, I can say this as I’ve been trying for years now and had my fair share of fear, doubt, self sabotage and imposter syndrome, yet when I see people seemingly unfettered by such obstacles I’m quick to ask their approach as it can be a lot to wear all the hats at once, sales, marketing, production, inspiration, exhibition etc. I’m grateful to have Fumi and a small handful of other friends to talk with in our little regional community that are following their hearts and turning creative dreams into reality. Just one kind word of support can swing a mindset into the positive, can influence the next step toward a dream and the simple act of being vulnerable about your doubts can help another gain strength knowing they’re not alone. I’ve the utmost respect for anyone who is committed to call themselves an artist, an act in this country that can be swifty cut down as pretentious under the tall poppy mandate silently practiced here in Australia. So when the sweetest most genuinely kind hearted human takes the leap to follow her heart through her art I’m pretty chuffed to be able to help. Thank you for our collaboration, I look forward to witnessing your assention , I’m very happy to call you my friend. #largeformatfilmportrait #largeformatfilmphotography #art #artist #portrait

Tim Silverwood, Ortho Surfer Series. May 2025. Most surfers I’ve met hold a deep respect for our oceans and coastlines and care about its maintenance. Some care so much they start organisations like @take3forthesea , pick up three bits of rubbish from your beach each time you’re there, that start a movement in a positive direction and @timsilverwood is one of those people and literally bubbles with enthusiasm about all things surf related. He actually disappeared whilst I was setting up the camera to shoot this portrait only to appear behind me grinning saying oh I just went and got another one right through to the creek! Thank you to @atdusk for the introduction and thanks Tim for taking part in this series and more so taking such good care of our oceans āœŒļøā¤ļø ā€œI grew up riding bodyboards, chasing sandstone slabs and short, sucky shore breaks. It wasn’t until I was 21 yrs old that a friend convinced me to put a longboard under my feet and join a ā€œmates tripā€ to Crescent Head. The rest is history, and whilst I still love ā€œlaying lowā€ on a mat or a boog I spend most of my time gliding or sliding on mid lengths. My happiest moments have been pulling up in the van at Crescent with a quiver of boards of all shapes and sizes and going through each one by one. I bloody love the place.ā€ Tim Silverwood, environmentalist & co-founder of Take 3 for the Seaā€ #surfer #surf #surfing #largeformatfilmphotography #portraits #takethreeforthesea #ocean #ilfordorthoplus80 #8x10 #deardorff

Luke Purkiss, Ortho Surfer Series. 31.1 26 I first met Luke through the organic hemp oil he produces, sun grown with love on local soil at @getwellsoonaustralia biodynamic and regenerative. If you’ve trouble sleeping, suffer with anxiety or arthritis do yourself a favour and give it a try, it works. Next time I met him was firing out of a barrel at the point so fast I couldn’t get out of his way quick enough and his fin met my rail and sent him flying and cemented our friendship. Years later I finally got to visit him at his rightly proclaimed slice of paradise. Luke walked me all around his land and shared a deep knowledge of all that is growing , flowing and living there, tasting berries, figs and finger limes he’s planted, swimming in the river, sharing with me what’s native, what’s not, what the floods have done, how the river banks have shifted and opened my eyes wide to the nature I stood within and how she moves. Something to nurture and guide to its highest potential after generations of wrong doing for future generations. He shared too much wisdom to fit in this post, suffice to say he lives his ā€œSurf n Turfā€ life with grace and style. Luke’s probably surfed more waves around the world than anyone else I’ve shot in this series and that’s saying a lot. Here’s a slices of our text conversation we shared and a track he picked. He’s currently enroute to a far flung spot in Indo. ā€œTo think just how intricate the relations are in the landscape around us daily has me frothing. I love watching it change over the seasons after floods and during dry times, reading the future potential... kinda like reading an unbroken swell line and how it just might be the one to hit the reef just right and bring the stoke on but the land takes longer to bare the same reward. I’ve been blessed to travel and glad I did it too. It’s hard to let it go... like it was then anyway. Camping, hitch hiking, boats into the forests, distant bars deep in the mountains and back packers hostels šŸ˜† and always back to the sea. ā€œ Thank you Luke for sharing your story. ā¤ļø #surfer #surf #surfnturf #largeformatfilmphotography #ilfordorthoplus #deardorff #8x10 #hempoil #mothernature

Jin Moriyama šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ 13.1.2026. So glad to be back shooting this Ortho Surfers series again, I’ve been busy / overwhelmed trying to put together a little studio and darkroom over @halfartstudio but when I heard @surfboardsbyjin will be leaving us again I couldn’t miss capturing him for this series as he is the personification of old school surfing culture in my eyes, 100% dedicated to the craft of shaping boards and the life style of surfing. Not the modern egocentric and aggressive world of locals only and dropping in but the all inclusive good times enjoyed with friends wrapped in all the elements of nature. Thank you for finding the time to be part of this series @surfboardsbyjin , so good to have you here again. Here are some words from Jin and a tune from his dad’s band, I’m not sure he could be any cooler if he tried. ā€œSurfing…every surfer is different with where they get a good feeling from. Some surfers get a good feeling from big waves. Some surfers love the small waves. Surfing for me is freedom. We just have to respect nature, the locals and all surfing styles. Surfing keeps me staying humble and the point at Crescent Head is special to me as I’ve met both good friends and teachers there. This song is from my home in Japan and it’s my Dads band.ā€ #orthosurfers #largeformatfilm #largeformatfilmportraits #ilfordorthoplus80 #8x10photography #deardorff #surf #surfer #frother
