Making music with somebody, and then death happening, being in proximity to mortality, but having this record at the end of it, itโs been such an important experience for me. Understanding the power of meeting somebody and making something, those serendipitous encounters, meaningful ones where you make something are to be treasured and cherished, because, in many ways, thatโs all thatโs left at the end.
For that experience to have been with Tony Allen - one of the greatest drummers of all time - makes this all the more bittersweet. He made his own rhythmic language which, above all, feels good in the body.
Itโs one thing to come up with a technical fingerprint thatโs new. Thatโs hard in and of itself. But to do that and have it still feel good to different generations of musicians from different cultures all around the world? Thereโs so much rhythmic information but it never stops feeling good. And he had no father in that. He came up with it. Thatโs the magic of it.
Long live Tony now & forever.

Rain canโt reach us is one my favourite pieces of music iโve worked on.
Its like a dirty hymn...rough & roiling at the bottom, celestial strings & arps up at the top. It feels like it spins right in the middle of two energies, in the exact centre between Tony & I with the yaw orbiting around us.
If you could pinpoint the place where our energies all meet it would be here...if creativity had co-ordinates.
@kit_monteith worked so hard on this video too, pulling all nighters & getting chased out of stations.
He individually manipulated every frame of the AI stop motion of which there are 25 per second!
He also drove us to Dungeness & we had seafood in the desert.

The Other Place plays in the Lyttelton Theatre from 27 September.
