Die hellen, in Pastelltönen gehaltenen Farben der Kronleuchter und Porzellanobjekte stehen in starkem Kontrast zu den verwendeten Motiven wie Schlangen, Totenköpfe oder deformierte Putti. Aus einem barocken Formenvokabular schöpfend verhandelt sie darin Themen wie Tod und Vergänglichkeit sowie Körperlichkeit und Sexualität. Mit genauem Blick auf die Widersprüche zwischen gesellschaftlich definierten und individuellen Rollen insbesondere von Frauen und nichtbinären Personen lässt Belova neue, queere Körper entstehen. My altar monster is currently on display at my solo exhibition 𝓜𝓞𝓝𝓢𝓣𝓡𝓤𝓜 𝓢𝓐𝓒𝓡𝓤𝓜 in the Dominikanerkirche in Krems until late October. In Orthodox tradition, women are not allowed to step behind the iconostasis into the altar— only men are permitted to enter this sacred space. As a woman raised in Orthodox culture, I’ve always been intrigued by what lies beyond. And since I was never allowed in, I built my own altar — fully visible from every angle, open to all, regardless of gender. I’ve never been this close to authentic Baroque — I’m so excited to be part of the Baroque Festival @barockfestivalstpoelten in St. Pölten! My yellow 𝓜𝓞𝓝𝓢𝓣𝓔𝓡 will join a musical 𝓣𝓡𝓘𝓞 𝓖𝓘𝓞𝓢𝓣𝓡𝓐, accompanied by harpsichord, baroque flute and other instruments. We sit down with Vienna-based sculptor Julia Belova to trace how porcelain, silicone, latex, and candy-bright surfaces grow into new bodies that are at once exciting and unsettling. Throwback to my recent collaboration with Lens Kühleitner @lan.rex.1 and Olivia Hild @olivia_hild , whose performance “trace my layers, thrust your guts” premiered this October at Brut @brut_wien . We worked together on the design and concept of the sound sculptures, which I later built in steel. It turned into a real engineering challenge — and the result went beyond anything I expected.
