What's in my touring pack in the winter?
Here's the basics + things I add in (minus Bandit for most days) :
PACK:
Okay first of all, this ALL FITS into my 35L Vivid. And I still have room for my camera (& Insta360), Lunch, candy, and depending on the day my ice axe and boot crampons. WILD.
WEARING:
•
@arcteryx atom SL, I always have this on, it's the perfect line of insulation and breathability over my merino that I can wear it all day and not overheat.
• Arc'teryx cerium down, this stays in my pack, it's my emergency warm layer. Light, packable, cozy warm.
• Arc'teryx Alpha jacket. I realized this year that the amount of time I'm actually wearing a hardshell touring is very very minimal, because I'm usually warm and working hard. So why carry the burliest jacket for everything INSIDE my pack all day? I lightened it up to this still very capable jacket and LOVE it.
• gloves, I have one big outer mitt, my windproof XC/ uptrack gloves and a backup pair of warm OR gloves Incase the other two get wet and cold. A habit I keep from years of winter bush work, always have a backup, your hands are important!
• Arc'teryx Gamma cap! I'm sweaty, I need a breathable hat haha! I always have a toque as well, just In case.
GEAR:
• ALWAYS SKI CRAMPONS! I splitboard, and with that comes having to deal with not as great traction on a lot of side hills. Unless I am GUARANTEED to be touring in deep powder all day, these stay in my bag. Being able to throw these on and travel safely and confidently is HUGE.
• FA kit and always a headlamp + repair kit.
•
@garmin inreach mini! (Drawn on here) But we always make sure we have one in the touring group each time.
• UL sit pad! Not only is it just nice to have for breaks, but could be a crucial and multipurpose tool in an emergency situation. Think....broken arm splint, waiting for SAR, so many things.
• skin wax.....I hate snow sticking to my skins, I will do as much as I can to avoid It.
What else do you keep in yours that might be different?
