DOCUMENTING EVERYDAYNESS AND THE OBSCURE DUFANG presents six films by Wang Bing and Zhou Tao. In the beginning, film camera was aimed at factories, staring at the sites of labor and production. A century later, however, cinema’s gaze lingers less on them. This program focuses on two significant filmmakers and their recent works. Taking different paths, they have brought the camera back to the sites of labor, geography, and humanity, attempting to rebuild our connection with the world through moving images. Zhou Tao is known for his works, which deeply merge an exploratory visual language with a documentary foundation. His creative trajectory, influenced by traditional painting, has in recent years focused on the ambiguity and complexity of geography. In the interplay between the concrete and the abstract, reality and image, he continually writes visual manuals on topography. Although the two artists featured in this program have divergent creative paths, a key commonality lies in their direct intervention with the body and the machine. This establishes a genuine and direct connection between the self and the image, the body and the world. Wren plans to accompany Eric out west, but it’s clear she‘s trusted the wrong person. • 🎦Variety (2K Restoration) by Bette Gordon 🇺🇸｜Chinese Premiere｜1983｜Drama｜100min Christine (Sandy McLeod) takes a job selling tickets at a porno theater near Times Square. She soon develops an obsession, finding self-expression through an interest in porn. Variety dramatizes the changes in her relationships with her boyfriend, Mark, and Louie, a dangerous-looking theater patron. • 🏨Hôtel des Acacias (2K Restoration) by Chantal Akerman et al. 🇧🇪｜1982｜Drama｜43min Two young women arrive at the hotel. The unattached owner is ready for love. The story follows the intertwined relationships of employees and clients, culminating in a ball. March 14th in Wuhan DUFANG presents Narrators: An Ongoing Journey of El Pampero Cine In the cinematic map of El Pampero Cine, Mariano Llinás and Alejo Moguillansky aren’t just storytellers, they are explorers making the act of narration visible. Their latest works, ”The Triptych of Mondongo“ (2024) and ”Pin de Fartie“ (2025), embrace the beauty of ”failure“ and endings. While Llinás turns a collapsed collaboration into a radical self-reflexive experiment, Moguillansky weaves a Beckettian elegy for cinema and the current world itself.
