In this collaborative exhibition, Duenas and Gagarin use the talåya (fishing net) as a metaphor for connection, culture, and the fragmented nature of language.
Through bilingual poetry, multimedia, and the musical structure of kåntan Chamorrita, the artists weave together a visual and sonic dialogue that explores their CHamoru fluencies. Just like a net, their work is a beautiful balance of what is held together and the spaces left in between.

Melilt | ak ngiltii a kotek (where I come from). Kimmel is a Palauan-Mexican American artist from Santa Cruz, California. Their work embraces their Palauan heritage and culture by carrying on the tradition of Palauan Storyboards. Typically carved into wood, Palauan storyboards illustrate many legends of the Palauan people. Kimmel’s work translates this tradition into the medium of ceramics, preserving those legends in the form of everyday objects. The exhibition will feature a selection of their ceramics as well as an installation of her personal collection of Palauan storyboards.

Over the summer, we held our first development table read at Pilele Projects @pileleprojects in Mid City. We invited members of the Chamoru and Pacific Islander community, and we cast Chamoru actors to read for each role. The goal was to hear the story read out loud for the first time and to receive feedback from those in attendance. There were some nerves at first, mostly from Neil, but the response during and after the reading was so positive and encouraging that it solidified our desire to see this film through.
In the coming months, we’ll be hosting our next development table read. We’ll be taking the notes we received from the first reading to write the next draft that will be read. For this next table read, we’ll be inviting potential investors and Pacific Islander members of the film industry, and we hope to reach our fundraising goal through this.
But first things first - we want to finish our crowdfunding campaign strong. There’s still time to donate and share by following the link below. Stay tuned for more updates on the campaign and our next steps. SYM!
