This is my favorite knife to cook with and one of the last Meyer lemons from Tucson. We got the knife in Crete. We drove all the way to the factory thinking it was a store. But they were very nice and showed us around anyway even though they don’t get customers there usually. The next factory down we met some trump supporting ceramicists, which was weird. They were nice, too, if a little intense. The handle is Purple Heart and it cracked here in the dry Colorado air. Still cuts like a dream, though.

Another reimagining of an old piece. I first drew this way back. Probably over a decade ago. It was pencil on Bristol board that I inked with Sakura microns. It was a little looser, not every line connecting, which felt right given the subject matter: my favorite myth is that of Ariadne and Theseus. Not the labyrinth and minotaur part, the part after where they escape Crete together and stop on Naxos. They fall asleep on the beach. But Theseus is visited by Athena, patron god of his home, and she tells him he’s destined for greater things than just love. He leaves Ariadne there, still sleeping, still thinking she’s starting a new life with him. And then she wakes up.

One of my favorite sumi ink drawings I’ve got in the back catalogue. It’s fun when the physical media has a mind of its own. When you’re sort of guiding motions, not forcing details. It’s a meditative thing. And it takes a maturity to embrace that I really enjoy pursuing.

I’ve been kind of nihilistic about the state of the world lately. It’s either that or become a puddle of anxiety, I figure. But also, it’s just become so absurd. So deeply and incontrovertibly stupid. We’re careening toward making ourselves obsolete in the systems of our own design and no one seems to give much a shit. It’s all shrugs and doom scrolls, mindlessly entertained. But if nothing means anything, I guess that’s as good a response as anything else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m opinionated about my cocktails. A manhattan is better with a lemon twist and green chartreuse (called a Greenpoint). Amaro is a world unto itself. An old fashioned is just adding sugar to whiskey which is objectively gross and seems like it should be marketed to children except for the obvious reasons it shouldn’t. But I love the craft and concoction. The depth of cosmopolitan knowledge required to do it with any amount of skill. It’s an art. That gets you drunk. Like any respectable art does.

This time of year you can still get persimmons in Colorado. The fuyu varietals (that look like orange tomatoes) are delicious honeysweet little miracles. The hachiya are booger sacks. This is based of the famous Six Persimmons 13th century ink painting by Muqi Fachang.

This is from my favorite picture I’ve ever taken. We were in Crete, sailing just north of the town I proposed in a few years earlier. That place was so formative for us. We felt out of time, just two making sense of themselves and the world they inherited. This year is going to be a big one and I’m so grateful to have such a love to build upon. @makeupsammy
