Dear Chicago,
I come from a family of animal lovers.
When I was in high school in downtown New Haven, my brother Pete and I found several kids tormenting a puppy. We took him into school, then home. I asked our mom if she’d ever want a dog to run with. When she said yes, I revealed the hidden puppy—soon named Gabe. He stayed with us for 15 wonderful years.
Two years later we took in Phryz B., Bacchus, and Pepper. Our house had four dogs and two cats. That’s the kind of family I come from. That’s where my love for animals began. And it’s why I care so deeply about PAWS Chicago and the work they do.
I’m proud to share that the 2026 Slice to Meet You fundraiser for PAWS Chicago—the Midwest’s largest no-kill shelter—raised $133,530.
That means more than 700 pets will be saved and receive essential veterinary care, including vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries.
This success belongs to an incredible community: our celebrity collaborators, matching donors, and the dedicated team at Piece. It reflects the very best of Chicago.
Special thanks to CM Punk, who created a pizza in memory of Larry, his PAWS Chicago adoptee, and helped spread the word to millions. Thank you, Ari Levy and the team at the Wiener Circle—Evelyn, Ragan, and Toni—for an outstanding month of delicious pizza and support. And to Rick Bayless, returning for a fourth year with his Bayless Family Pizza and once again knocking it out of the park.
Here’s the impact: a $35 pizza becomes a $70 donation to PAWS—thanks to Piece’s $10 contribution and $60 in matching gifts. I’m honored to stand alongside our generous match partners: Sean and Alison Fogarty, Laura Desmond, Len Goodman, Kristin “Kmac” MacGregor, and Joe Mansueto.
