Kathryn Chan Ceppi has spent her entire life in Chinatown. She has witnessed its highs and lows, but through it all, @phoenixbakery has remained a constant.
Phoenix Bakery was founded in 1937 by Ceppi’s parents, Fung Chow “F.C.” Chan and his wife, Wai Hing Chan, with the vision of creating a community gathering place offering classic Chinese and Western desserts to the small but growing Chinese community in Los Angeles.
For generations, Angelenos have celebrated birthdays and special occasions with Phoenix Bakery’s signature Strawberry Whipped Cream Cake. It’s a core food memory for those who grew up in the area, as well as for many who traveled long distances just to get the cake.
