The Villa Beer, built in 1930, reborn in 2026. The architects Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach; the clients Julius Beer and his wife Grete (née Blitz). By the end of the 30s they had fled to NYC with their son Hansi. Eldest child Lene, my grandmother, escaped with her husband to Scotland. They tried to get papers for younger sister and aspiring photographer Liesl, but the Nazis found her first. Her bedroom and darkroom stand as a sensitive memorial.
The house is now open to the public, thanks to the staggering dedication of the non-profit Foundation established by Lothar Trierenberg.
Portrait sessions from November, December & the first days of shooting a film portrait of filmmaker @murray_grigor (my dad). Thanks to @gemagain and @markcousinsfilm for the on camera field work brilliance ✨ and to @safetypinsandchiffon for the record 📷 and the epic styling 🤩
Reflecting on seeing the latest show by artist (who’s also my daughter) @stellamcgarvey
… back home now, looking through my faded old copy of ‘Reservations’ and finding they share a certain language.
Make the trip to Peckham- this exquisite show needs to be experienced up close, eye to eye…

The accompanying pic is from a series shot by storyteller photographer @phoebegrigor , it was taken whilst I was heavily pregnant, on a shoot with no agenda except for gallivanting the Lothians of Scotland with a boot full of favourite garms. We had no idea where the portraits may end up.
More of these to come.
