Entrepreneurial playwright and founder co-director of THISISPOPBABY Phillip McMahon is in conversation with his mentor Gerry Stembridge, playwright, screenwriter and novelist and co-creator of the much loved “Scrap Saturday” radio programme with comedian Dermot Morgan. They will discuss how they met and the ‘je ne sais quoi’ which sparked Phillip to follow in Gerry’s footsteps as a theatre artist. 2025 was a work year of extreme highs and unexpected challenges. Mainly it was about queens - club queens, *the* comedy queen, and HRH of drag queens. WAKE, RIOT, PINOTPHILE & IF THESE WIGS COULD TALK kept me out of daylight for most of the year. The work gave us debuts on the West End, Manchester, Aukland and Athboy. In the background, I somehow managed to write two new plays and half a book (for @sliverlit - stay tuned). The biggest kick these days is supporting other artists and it was a pleasure supporting and developing work with several artists, including but not exclusive to @felispeaks @unamullally & @emmetkirwan . The Arts in Ireland is a vocation and a labour of love and often a giant pain in the soul but I can honestly say, it’s worth it. Coming together live in rooms to listen, experience and share will always trump isolation and online. For anyone who supported these shows or others, thank you. If you’re curious about theatre but don’t go - take a punt in 2026. 🎟️♥️

An honour to see ONCE BEFORE I GO retained on the Leaving Cert for a third year. With queer Irish drama on the curriculum, the country really has come a long way. 19 years live-laugh-loving with this beauty. Every day of those years has been stuffed with laughter. It’s a crime we haven’t given the people a day out yet.

We’re thrilled that @thisispopbaby ’s WAKE has been announced as a headline show in Sydney Festival’s 50th anniversary programme. The thrill is even more thrilling as it’s @krisanthenum inaugural programme - and what an incredible festival he has in store for one of the best cities in the world. So - tell your cousins, your mates, your long lost aunty - leave no diaspora left unturned! We’ll be in Sydney for the month of January soaked in gin and Factor 50. The show travels with the support of the brilliant @cultureireland .

It’s been a wild ride directing @joannemcnally ’s new stand-up *event* ‘Pinotifile’. The show is a juggernaut of energy and belly laughs from one of this country’s greatest talents - and she’s only getting stronger! It’s a joy to watch talent rise and it’s been a fun holiday stepping into Joanne’s universe and watching her harmonise with her (sold out) audiences. Two of the great loves of my life in one tome: this play & @finters . It’s publication day for the second edition (a schools & universities edition) of Once Before I Go. Professor Fintan Walsh has written the most gorgeous contextualising essay, and it’s a heart warmer to share this book with the dearest friend. The iconic and brilliant cover image is by Thomas A. O’Shea, and we’re grateful to him and the @irishqueerarchive for supporting this book.
