The title AUSSTELLUNG GEHT HINTER IHNEN WEITER [Exhibition continues behind you] acts as both an instruction and a complication. The phrase seems to orient the viewer within the gallery, while also casting doubt on where the exhibition begins. For Timischl’s first exhibition at Sultana, this uncertainty becomes a subtle joke: the show announces itself by suggesting it may already have started elsewhere.
Timischl’s practice brings together painting, video, sculpture, and text, often culminating in site-specific installations. Through humor and irony, his work addresses questions of visibility, class, taste, power, and the social codes of the art world. His works often appear self-aware, as if they were able to comment on the situations in which they find themselves.
Philipp Timischl (b. 1989, Graz, Austria) lives and works in Paris. Solo exhibitions include St. Andräkirche with LAYR, Salzburg (2025); Hauser & Wirth, Paris (2025); the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade (2025); Le Confort Moderne, Poitiers (2024); and Secession, Vienna (2018). His work has been presented internationally, including at the NGV Triennial, Melbourne (2023); Marta Herford Museum, Herford / Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Bielefeld (2024); the Biennale de Lyon (2022); and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2013).

Therefore I don't know anything yet.
But I’m glad you have me.
At some point it became unclear how anyone could squeeze yet another painting into this world.
It’s difficult in one sense but difficult on the other hand.
I materialized in New York, of all places.
So as a painting I have to ask myself -
Who am I even?
Like, does the world need to see me?
There’s literally a billion paintings in this world and listen:
“Just recently I was like the absolute newest one. It felt crazy.”
If I had more experience being a painting I'd get anxiety.
I’m rough out there.
I wasn’t painted stupid.
You’re not becoming stupid.
