This instrument uses our object `nn~` to run a new type of model that we trained on sets of copyleft growls, screams and other happy types of people's vocalizations. The latent controls are then mapped to a MIDI controller and we feed the audio of birds into the model as an exciter. The model then “translates” the birds in real-time while we control the output sound. You can try it yourself, everything is free and open-source in MaxMSP and Ableton Live:

サウンドアーティスト、研究科学者、大学教授、そしてベース中毒者でもあるフィリップ・エスリングは、東京を拠点に活動する実験的エレクトロニック・アーティストであり、音を作り出し、体験する新しい方法を探求している。彼の音楽的・科学的な旅は、音楽と科学、構造と本能、伝統と技術革新といった両極を和解させたいという欲求から生まれている。「デジタルな儀式」という彼の発想は、心に語りかけ、胸に突き刺さるような音を追い求める原動力となっている。
フランス東部の田舎で育った彼は、壊れたシンセを改造し、数学や信号処理を学ぶ傍ら、違法レイブで演奏していた。その後、機械学習の博士号を取得。IRCAMの終身教授として、ACIDSチームやBjörkやHolly Herndonといったアーティストにも使われるRAVEなどのツールを生み出した。現在は創作活動に専念し、古代的な音楽直感と機械が生み出すカオスを融合させた没入型のオーディオビジュアル儀式を披露している。
Sound artist, research scientist, university professor and bass addict, Philippe Esling is a Tokyo-based experimental electronic artist exploring new ways of making and experiencing sound. His musical and scientific journeys come from his need to reconcile extremes —uniting music and science, structure and instinct, traditions and technological innovations. His idea of “digital rituals” drives him to chase sounds that speaks to the mind and hit straight through to the chest.
Raised in rural eastern France, he grew up hacking broken synths and playing in illegal raves while studying mathematics and signal processing, earning a PhD in machine learning. As a tenured professor at IRCAM, he created the ACIDS team and tools like RAVE, used by artists like Björk and Holly Herndon. Now fully focused on creation, he performs immersive audiovisual rituals that blend ancient musical intuition with machine-born chaos.
