For early Filipinos, like many still today, it is believed that a life force or soul inhabits all entities, both animate and inanimate. These spirits are called Anitos.
Co-created by award-winning artist Justin Talplacido Shoulder (The Glitter Militia, Club Ate), ANITO combines collective craft, puppetry, dance and experimental electronic music to reimagine these myths and stories for the now. It’s a work rooted in Sydney’s underground queer and diasporic club scenes.
The collective behind ANITO create a ‘Queer Filipino future folkloric space of storytelling’ that centres the importance of nature spirits, intuiting with them as guides towards imagining possible parallel futures.
Performers Justin Talplacido Shoulder and Victoria Hunt transform into animal-human-plant-machine hybrids. In this world of sheer terror and tremendous beauty, they interrogate colonial wrongdoings and queer ancestral mythologies.

Introducing the works from the exhibition 120 BPM - Bring Your Friends at @tinshedsgallery opening this Friday the 27th of February at 8PM.
The exhibition features an archival presentation of Monsta Gras, a cultural event established in Sydney during 2010. The original event was co-created by Justin Talplacido Shoulder, Matthew Stegh and Penelope Benton with a wide network of collaborators. Monsta Gras emerged to reclaim the activist and protest origins of the 1978 Mardi Gras, centering creative autonomy, risk, and community. The term “nightcraft” has been used by Shoulder to describe a practice of making that unfolds through nightlife, performance, and collective world-building. Rather than defining craft as skilled object-making, nightcraft situates it within an ecology of embodied practice, shared labour, political memory, and alternative social formation.
