Pink Dot took place during a pivotal time for Hong Kong’s queer community earlier this month. The city’s biggest annual LGBTQ+ event was held at the prominent West Kowloon Cultural District for the past two years. But this year - as the community faces some of its biggest challenges since the city’s laws against homosexual activity were dropped in 1991 - the event was forced online
Pink Dot is a family-friendly event with live performances, music, market booths and fashion shows, like this year’s Genderama, and it was scheduled to return to the cultural district’s gorgeous harbourfront Art Park for the third time on October 12. But in July, the WKCD told the organisers that their application for 2025 had been denied, without providing an explanation
This is not an isolated event. In September, Hong Kong lawmakers rejected a bill that would have granted limited rights to same-sex couples who were married overseas. And in October, the WKCD also cancelled the LGBTQ-themed play We Are Gay, written by award-winning playwright Candace Chong, saying that it received “a large number of complaints” which alleged the play “promotes confrontation and defames Hong Kong”
As you can imagine, @pinkdothk went ahead anyway and showcased a spirit of resilience with its “LOVE-Streaming Concert”. Streamed live on Sunday November 2, the concert had a huge lineup of local celebs and artists, and the Genderama show orchestrated by art director and stylist Kary Kwok @karyphoto , and highlighted how the community won’t just sit back and be silenced
