Yesterday at St. James AME Church, we explored the history of Pittsburgh’s Black orchestras that thrived across the city in the 1930s through the very music they performed!
Hosted by Jacob Joyce and featuring Pittsburgh Symphony musicians, the evening brought historic concert programs back to life while highlighting the shared expression and community built through classical music.
This concert was in collaboration with the Afro-American Music Institute and featuring research by Candace Burgess, and was presented in honor of the memory of AAMI co-founder Dr. James T. Johnson. ❤️

Grateful that after more than a year of planning and months of rehearsals, we were able to bring Wynton Marsalis’s “All Rise” to life this weekend with @mendelssohnpgh , the Lift Every Voice Unity Choir (directed by the amazing @nikkiporter_ ), @pghsymphony , @jazzdotorg , @maestrobenny , and of course, @wyntonmarsalis . We are all richer for having experienced this monumental work together, and I know that Wynton’s imperative to rise up and find strength in each other will resonate within all of us in the days ahead.
Moments from Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise this past weekend! 🎺
Thank you to our patrons for coming out to enjoy such an incredible evening of music, and the following for being part of this concert:

That’s a wrap on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis’ performance of “All Rise” at Pittsburgh Symphony Heinz Hall. Composed by Marsalis, the work brought together the JLCO, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Lift Every Voice Unity Choir led by Nikki Porter, and vocal soloists, conducted by Maestro Benjamin Northey.
Next week, the JLCO returns to Rose Theater (May 14-16) for “Sketches of Miles: Miles Davis at 100,” to commemorate the centennial of Miles Davis and the orchestrations of one of Davis’ greatest collaborators, Gil Evans.
