Grateful that after more than a year of planning and months of rehearsals, we were able to bring Wynton Marsalis’s “All Rise” to life this weekend with @mendelssohnpgh , the Lift Every Voice Unity Choir (directed by the amazing @nikkiporter_ ), @pghsymphony , @jazzdotorg , @maestrobenny , and of course, @wyntonmarsalis . We are all richer for having experienced this monumental work together, and I know that Wynton’s imperative to rise up and find strength in each other will resonate within all of us in the days ahead.

What a joy it was to share three amazing performances of Mahler 2 with @mendelssohnpgh@pghsymphony@manfredhoneck@yingletsings and @kate_mezzo last weekend at Heinz Hall! And having listened to many, many recordings of this work over the years, I am so excited that we captured this weekend’s efforts for future generations.
This was an experience that will stay with me for a long time, and even though I’m looking forward to all of the projects to come, I will not be disappointed when this amazing music and message come around again!
The @mendelssohnpgh is currently in preparation mode for Mahler’s Resurrection 🤩
You will not want to miss this epic BNY Classics weekend on March 13-15, featuring one of the moving and emotional finales in the classical repertoire. Get tickets now by visiting pittsburghsymphony.org! 🎼

They weren’t kidding when they said “practice, practice, practice”.
At Carnegie Hall with The Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus performing Verdi Requiem. To say I’m excited is an understatement.
First TCO concert of 2026! Happy to hear the band at home before Verdi Requiem next week at Severance and then on tour at Carnegie Hall, the Arsht Center Miami, and Artis-Naples.
I’m grateful for these last two (very busy) months - US premieres in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, The Lion King at Blossom, and season starts for Youth Chorus and Junior Mendelssohn. I am amazed every day that this is what I get to do.
But I’m also grateful for four days in the desert with Andrew, dear friends John and Vince, and the promise of excellent Mexican food!
Wishing my Grandma Arlyne Singer a very happy 93rd birthday! The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus was thrilled to help me celebrate this amazing woman, and as I said to them, anything I do that is good is because of the example of love and kindness that Grandma has set for me. We love you, Grandma!
Over the weekend, I began my third season as director of The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh - time flies! We had a memorable collaboration with the Pittsburgh Symphony and guest conductor/composer Joe Hisaishi, best known for his anime soundtracks including “Spirited Away” and “The Boy and the Heron”. We presented the US premiere of “The End of the World”, Hisaishi’s visceral response following his visit to the 9/11 Memorial in NYC and his reflection on how the world has changed since the tragedy of September 11th.
What a great post-concert hang with the maestro, soloist John Holiday, the brilliant Shelly Fuerte (who made all of this happen!), PSO cellist Michael DeBruyn, and of course Andrew. We discussed life, music, and most importantly, how soon we can do this all again!
