After a stint of 'Lost Worlding' in recent times, I'm revisiting some memories that saw me out in the wilds with my film comrades here in NZ!
The term harkens back to The Lost World : Jurassic Park, catching this film on TV as a kid is a huge part of the reason I do what I do. It left such an impression, the grandeur expedition vibes, the visceral effects and worlding building all glued together by John Williams immaculate score. Pure adventure. Pop culture froths over JP 1, though the immediate sequel has Spielberg plastered all over it and dialled up to boot. Golden era cinema type. The perfect balance of practical and CG effects. Emphasis on the practical. CG tech was in its infancy and limited whilst also early adopter expensive so they were forced to make majority of effects IRL, same goes for films like Titanic. Real dinos. High stakes and high rewards.
Also shout out to @nzcine who hosted Shelly Johnson the DP of JurassicPark3 at an event in Auckland mid last year, I had the chance to pick his brains and hear about the ebb and flow of career moves that got him in that seat! My eyes lit up when he opened the floor with "I'm a DP with a lighting background". Speaking my language maaan
