(edited for length): six years ago today, I released an album that started with the lyric "can we go to the beach?" just in time for the world to unequivocally reply "absolutely not."
"Dither Beach" is the most recent album in the pop-punk branch of my long-running chiptune canon, and it stands as the most up-to-date showcase of how I've evolved and pushed the boundaries of that particular segment of my sound and technique. it should come as no surprise that, after six years, I've had things cooking for Dither Beach's successor for quite some time. in fact, the concept has been fleshed out for over five years at least.
as it happened, though, I took so many detours that I find myself far away from where I started. I finally released "florence" after seven years, I pieced together a companion EP to "nothing is for sure" from the many close-to-complete session files that didn't make that album, I went down the rabbit hole of Furnace's support for Virtual Boy, coalescing with my years of skilling up in LSDj to pivot entirely into "Familial Verses" and "Additional Verses" -- the era that I find myself in now, though even that's drawing to a close sooner than later.
now, having deferred the successor to "Dither Beach" for so long, I can no longer revisit it from the same place. I am no longer as interested in the concept, and having widened my horizons so, no longer as motivated to iterate upon my pop-punk recipes. if I try to finish the album I started six years ago, I will fail. doing so is simply incompatible with where I stand today and where my present interests lie. so after much consideration, I am re-scoping the album to be a tight EP instead. I hope this isn't disappointing for those of you who have waited six years and counting for more of that sound, but I would rather release a kick-ass front-to-back EP than a half-assed LP that my heart isn't all the way in.
in brighter news (and in classic petri fashion), I've been working on new tunes and concepts aside from all of this. as for the EP, I hope to have it for you this summer -- fingers crossed! please look forward to "the triple crown" soon, and thank you as always. -petri
