I’m normally posting Unit Photography from scenes in Hallmarks “The Way Home” but wanted you to see these images from Episode One of Season Four.
They are images made on behalf of the Art Department, and the camera does a special inset shot of them as they provide key evidence to help move the story line along. For example, in this first image, the white blanket around the baby is proof that Elliotts’s mother cared about him through the timeline.
A lot of work goes into these images, as you can see by the aging of the print to have a 70’s feel.

Cross: Season 2 is on Amazon and it does not disappoint!
The show is lush and rich in production value and lighting.
I have never made this many images for the Art Department on any show before… yet they all found a place… either on a murder board, as a clue that moved the narrative forward, as a Translite background in the studio, or as an element for the motion graphics team.
In the third and fourth images shown, the images I made of the actors were “de-aged” by the show’s Graphic Artist, Aaron Morrison. He is brilliant.

Devil in Disguise: The John Wayne Gacy story for Peacock TV was a very creative project to be part of. As well as shooting Translite, I had to photograph Michael Chernus in the same position as Gacy, so that our graphics team could drop his image into the original, where he is shaking First Lady Roslyn Carter’s hand. This screen grab with Michael Angarano shows the image in play during a key courtroom scene. We also recreated Gacy’s wedding photo, but in this case, we used our actors rather than tying into existing historical images.
We also recreated yearbook photos.
It is really exciting to see how my images become critical props in the film.

Everything’s Going To Be Great is an amazing feature that I got to work on with Bryan Cranston, Allison Janney, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Jack Champion, and Chris Cooper, in North Bay, Ontario, one of my favourite places to shoot. What is highly unusual is that the Key Art used to promote the film, as shown in these two pieces, are images I made shooting the Unit Photography, rather than from a separate Gallery shoot. It makes me all the more proud of the work.
I am anxious to see what other images they use in the upcoming weeks before release.

Today’s office is a little bit unusual. I often shoot a Translite from outside, either on a tripod or in a lift. Not all locations will tolerate this though, as is the case today where we are three stories up and have to shoot the panorama from one spot only. Hanging an extension out the window calls for lots of stability, so six sand bags later, I’m ready to go.

I really never know for certain what it is going to be needed to make an image until I get to the shoot.
But my motto is “Plan your work and work your plan.”
Consequently I bring gear with me but am prepared with more just in case. So whether I need to scramble in sand and get dirty knees, shoot directly down over my subject, work at in a lift with a fall arrest on, or hide behind a stand, I am most happy when I do whatever it takes and make the image we set out to get. It’s a lot of fun.
Next year, I will have been a pro for forty years.
Im not quitting.

Seeing this Key Art at the premiere of Home Free was so exciting for me. My friend Avi asked me to shoot on his amazing feature film directing debut and I jumped on it. Avi has involved me in so many awesome projects during our careers; he is very generous that way. The film is a work of heart. The performances when I was shooting Unit Stills were powerful, but seen edited together as the completed film caught me off guard. It is visceral and some of the finest performances you are likely to see for some time.
So congratulations to all involved as this is truly a special film, and I am honoured to have played my tiny part.

Normally I make 90% of my images with a 24-70 f/2.8 lens. Sometimes though, we are shooting in such low light, that even at 16,000 ISO the 2.8 lens is too slow to work with.
Then I bring out my primes, the 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/1.8. I am always stunned at how sharp they are. In the 70’s, a zoom lens tended to be fairly soft and lack contrast. Today’s zoom lenses are superb but a prime still rules.
These images were made shooting wide open, and therefore with almost no depth of field, but the eye auto focus does the trick, and the mood is unmatched.

It’s Translite time!
As new shows start up, they need the giant backgrounds in the studio that make it look like we are on the actual location.
In this case I got to spend the day shooting in a quarry with Barbara, our productions Art Director. The finished image will be made up of as many as 40 images composited together. These backgrounds can often be as big as 120 feet long. It is precise work wrangling many factors such as lighting, geometry, focus, but I really enjoy it.

Making images with Chyler is being given a gift. She is the most supportive actor I’ve ever worked with. Seeing this light just to the side of set, I knew would make an incredible mood, and we made it in between some very emotional scenes. Chyler gave me this. She is an extraordinary person.
