It’s an unexpected pleasure to get sent a picture of the arts pages of one of the world’s most iconic newspapers and see our semi naked audience smiling back ☺️ thanks to all the @borealisfestival artists, team, volunteers and audiences who make the festival so special 💛 and to @voice.of.a.jeneration and @davidbtorch for the thoughtful words and pictures.

Introducing Re-Imagine Europe Pilot Study #12 – To listen is to hold out your hand, and let it be held by the other 🫂 Between 2022 and 2024, Sea Sámi and Norwegian artist and musician Elina Waage Mikalsen undertook a long-form research, engagement, and performance journey that listened closely to the resonances between Sámi history, identity, and erasure, and the possibilities of experimental sound. Moving through music, noise, silence, and attention itself, the project traced how listening can become a site of shared memory, resistance, and imagination. This wide-ranging project unfolded during a moment of heightened attention to Sámi artists, knowledge systems, and ways of working within Norwegian cultural life, as well as across Sámi communities throughout the Nordic region. I grew up a member of the YOC (young ornithologists club @rspb ) so to see a Peregrine Falcon (the world’s fastest living thing!!) up close in a car park tonight on the way back from the kids piano lessons was thrilling. A bit sad for the (massive) common gull that became dinner, but amazing to watch this beautiful bird in action. Thanks to Arild from @ninaforskning for the impromptu nature lesson 🦅

Thanks to @bergenartbookfair I now have a copy of @kteam_ksge ‘s book «Breakfast». It’s a very perfect collision of my breakfast interests, shokupan obsession, DIY publishing and pre-insta food cataloguing (such as @scanwiches ) - thanks Ryuta!

What a privilege to take part in this gathering, as a visitor and a mediator. Thanks to @dylan.w.robinson for the invitation, and to @groupelevivier , to my wonderful collaborators @patricknickleson and @julia_ulehla , to @musicnorway for the travel support, and my steadfast travelling companion @elinawaage , to all who shared from the stage, and to the land and the Mohawk and Anishinaabe folks who hosted us. "Having experiences that go outside of your comfort zone give you a way of challenging your own perceptions, and I believe all of that is really valuable in a democratic society…if you don’t make that available to everybody in society, then I think you’re failing the political potential of the art and music.” I CARE IF YOU LISTEN Editor Amanda Cook pens this profile of Borealis artistic director, Peter Meanwell, as he prepares to step aside after 12 years of "bold programming and radical accessability." 13 years ago I co-authored a book of breakfast recipes, called The Breakfast Bible. It took us so long to write it that by the time it was published (by @bloomsburypublishing ) the clean-eating fad was taking off and our unctuous breakfast odyssey lost out to a new world of kale-smoothies and spiralised courgettes. It’s still a great book though, and I make this buttermilk pancake recipe at least once a week 🥞

@borealisfestival Talk x Plattform Crafting Alternate Realities Sat 14 Mar, Upstairs Free and open to all Two festival artists bridging visual practices, sound, and performance come together to reflect on their respective practices in shaping new or alternate worlds. Danish artist @cecilia_fiona presents sculptural works and costumes in Bergen Kunsthall’s current exhibition, activated as part of an experimental opera performance, Infinite Pollination. In this conversation, she meets the Oslo-based artist @camillenorment , who premieres at Borealis her commissioned work, Will there also be singing? Both artists shape realities through sound, and in this conversation, they discuss different materialities and perspectives on how sonic realities emerge in their work. The talk is moderated by @petermeanwell , director of @lydgalleriet and former Artistic Director of @borealisfestival .
