I wish I were a poet so I could eloquently express the potency of celebrating a life and a death so close together. Two beings that mean so much to me, whose physical bodies will never meet, but have shaped my path so much. I don’t know if Maya would exist had I never met Alicia. Witnessing her as a mother is truly the only thing that inspired and gave me the confidence to walk this path. After her murder, I went through a deep transformation and when I landed, this very loud voice was calling on me to bring this soul earth side…a huge shift in my previous ethos and life plan.
Mayas due date wasn’t til late January but I swear she arrived 5 weeks early so that she was with me on the first anniversary of Alicia’s murder. Each year, I hold her close as we light the altar candles, she plays with Alicia’s jewelry and I tell her stories about her crazy Tia. She must be so busy up in the realm, I know I call upon her often. Today I hope her spirit can rest, and is at peace feeling how much love is still flowing out of us and in her direction.
May all those who lost their life on this day feel our deep reverence for their time here. May their spirits all shine through in our proudest and most joyous moments. May their memories be a light and an inspiration of how we want to love and care for others.
