David Chernushenko knew little of his roots in Ukraine until, in 2021, his Aunt Raya shared with him the family memoir she had been writing. On reading it, he had a powerful response: Why, as he grew up decades earlier, had he been told so little of this amazing story; and how might he work with her to bring this tale to a much larger audience? David Chernushenko will join us on Thursday, May 14 at 2 pm at the Picton Branch Library and our friends at @7TownhomeofMAGRC will be in attendance to share a little about how you can get started researching your own story.

There were so many folks eager to fix things last weekend at the third annual PEC Repair Cafe! 🤯 • 110+ people visited the Repair Cafe • 85+ people brought items to repair and 25+ people just visited • Approximately 145 items were brought for repair • Approximately 65% of items were successfully repaired, 12% were partially repaired, and 22% were not repaired/not able to be repaired • 14 volunteers giving 56+hrs of time at the cafe (not including prep) • At minimum wage (approximately $18/hr) that’s $1,008 of volunteer services - at the minimum average wage of a skilled repairer in Canada (approximately $60/hr) that’s $3,360 of volunteer services • 6 full bags of food and personal items were donated to the @peclibrary Community Pantry • $421.55 in cash was collected for the @loyalist_humane_society (plus a $20 donation from last summer when we did a @commongrounds.pec pop-up at the Picton Farmers’ Market - so we’ll round it up to $450) The impact of fixing a treasured item for someone is of course immeasurable. But for those who appreciate the quantitative data, it’s easy to say that thanks to the amazing volunteers and supporters of the Repair Cafe, we were able to give at least $5,000 in value back to the community last Saturday and save a bunch of stuff from the landfill. Win, win, win. The Repair Cafe would not be possible without the talented and generous volunteers who give their time and materials to help others. Shout out to: @moneymattersmadeline and her superstar Dad Geoff (who comes from the GTA for this) @tersitup @neiljgillman @plo_bryson @snoozeanne42 @jasonpettit.photography @siriuspsyclist / @bloomfield_bicycle_co @mikedasilva @sarob12 @hereandtherehoney @janiceedwards2086 @cdavie5 @jozef.winter @rebecky_lamb We’re grateful to our partners at the @peclibrary for hosting and troubleshooting (like doing a mad-dash to GT Boutique for coffee filters!) and the generosity of The Elderberry Fund through @thecountyfoundation which is financially supporting a series of one-off repair/skills workshops this year PLUS a second, fall Repair Cafe in Wellington (details to come!) ⬇️ CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS ⬇️

A: The Repair Cafe is co-organized by 10-15 local folks who are donating their time and talent as volunteers to organize, promote and make repairs - all in partnership with the rad folks at the @peclibrary 🙌🏻 Q: Will Becky really be offering free hugs for broken hearts? A: Yes. But we hear her hidden agenda is intel for an upcoming ‘How to Give a Good Hug’ workshop… 🫂
