For the past twenty years covering the foster care system has been a personal project of mine. In that time I have developed an incredible volume of images. Due to the sensitivity of the subject matter however, I’m not often able to share the images.
The toughest of cases are often assigned a CASA (court appointed special advocate), a well-trained volunteer adept at navigating the system. More than that, in many cases CASAs develop lifelong relationships with the kids they’ve helped.
I’m happy to share these images of individuals supporting kids in the system, through CASALA. Perhaps one of the greatest opportunities in volunteering…just saying, if you’re curious.

A while back I had an idea to shoot two brothers who’d opened several super chic restaurants/nightclubs in the Ventura Corridor. Impressed by their appetite for risk, I concocted this idea and they took me up on it. The restaurants eventually closed and I lost track of them.
Earlier this week I came across the scans and decided to post the images, thinking the story ended on a down note. Hoping for the best, I Googled the cool one. Low & behold the Finefrock brothers are #winning in the restaurant business.
Believe me everything they served at that time was top-notch and the images for them remain central to my hospitality portfolio. I couldn’t be happier for them. I’m coming for the burger.

Flashing back to my favorite all time project, sorry everyone else. In 2002 I won a contract with the Department of Labor and traveled across the Northwest documenting regional Job Corps facilities. Everything I could hope for; emotion, inspiration, determination and tension with a good dose of awkwardness. Not to mention my initial exposure to the foster system.
Best of all, it was all shot on film, both straight and cross processed. A handful of my favorites.
