Thank you to everyone who joined us today to celebrate the unveiling of Ambi’s newest public artwork, Under(currency) by Cindy Mochizuki. It was inspiring to see the community come together for such a meaningful moment—connecting through art, story, and place.
Under(currency) blends mythology, local history, and interactive storytelling to reflect the layered past of the Marpole/Oakridge area—from early Japanese Canadian communities and historic streetcar routes to today’s growing, transit-connected neighbourhood.
We were also pleased to welcome our neighbours @feastandfallowcafe , who provided delicious food and drinks for guests. Attendees enjoyed a custom photobooth featuring Cindy’s artwork, allowing everyone to take home a small piece of Under(currency).
We’re deeply grateful to @cindy_mochizuki , @ballardfineart , the teachers and students from Osler Elementary who contributed to the early design, and the entire Ambi team for bringing this project to life. We’d also like to thank Vancouver Acting Mayor and Councillor Lenny Zhou, Councillor Mike Klassen, and Councillor Lisa Dominato for joining us for the unveiling.
Visitors can experience the artwork in person at Ambi on Cambie, PCI’s newest rental homes across from Oakridge–41st Avenue Station. Nine bronze deities are positioned above the entrance, with a tenth located at ground level as a story stone featuring a QR code that connects visitors to the digital world of Under(currency).
The interactive experience can also be accessed online—where you can uncover a daily fortune inspired by each deity:

“Under(currency)” by Cindy Mochizuki presents 10 mythical and magical deities realized in a 2D tri-colour story stone, a bronze sculpture, and an interactive website bringing to life what is unseen and underneath the surface of the bustling day-to-day life and activities happening in the Marpole neighborhood. Created for the outdoor façade of the PCI Development and Ambi on Cambie’s West 41st multicomplex development, this public artwork brings new mythologies created through a community engagement program with a group of students from the neighbouring Osler Elementary School.
Cindy worked with a grade 3 & 4 class developing the design of each deity. The 20 students worked with air dry clay, ink and story to create the narrative of 10 special deities considering the Marpole area and its histories connected to the BC Electric Interurban train that used to pass through the area taking commuters through the city. These deities have informed the final
design for the site. Students worked with floral and fauna motifs of the Marpole area, the seasons, and the stories from the street cars to shape the Who, What, Where and How of each deity.
The story stone acts as a 2D work at the sidewalk level depicting a mosaic drawing of 1 of the 10 deities that appear at this site and a unique QR code. The story stone is the start point or the physical doorway to the ‘under(current)’. Upon swiping your smartphone l against the QR Code the viewer enters the abandoned wishing well and exists inside the waters of this world. The QR code will produce daily messages randomly from one of the guardian characters.
