It takes a village to make an impact - here is what ours did this month!
Weâve had an impactful month of volunteer events all over NYC! Our volunteers showed up ready to work while also having fun and building community along the way.
We kicked off the month at the Spring Opening at Campos Community Garden where our volunteers helped clean, trim, cut, and prepare the gardens for the upcoming spring season! We got our hands dirty and learned a lot of gardening skills as we worked together!
Then we celebrated Earth Day by joining the Earth Day Shoreline Cleanup in Flushing. Volunteers learned the impact of pollution problems and the solutions to begin to fix it!
Finally, we volunteered at the John Jay Park Neighbors for a general cleanup and helped with mulching on a chilly day in the city!

We are beyond excited to welcome this yearâs Project by Project New York Steering Committee! We wrapped up our first month with our monthly SteerCo meeting where we had team bonding moments and shared ideas for our upcoming year.
We also had our strategy retreat where we went over the roadmap for this year while also getting to know each other better. This happened to be our largest retreat yet with over 30 people and it was also our first strategy retreat spanning an entire weekend. We had lots of fun planning and coming up with ideas to make PBP even better than last year. We're so excited to show you all what we have in store for this year!

We are excited to announce the 2026 theme: âCommunities in Actionâ!
Asian Americans have often been inaccurately labeled the âmodel minorityâ, a stereotype that obscures economic disparities and overlooks the diverse lived experiences within our communities. According to a report by AAPI Data and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, Asian Americans experience a 10% poverty rate, yet that rate varies significantly when disaggregated. For example, poverty rates between Hmong Americans and Indian Americans are 23.1% and 5.3%, respectively, demonstrating varied needs within the AAPI umbrella.
To combat specific cultural, historical, and geographically determinant factors, generations of leaders have built community-based organizations (CBOs) to directly serve the growing needs of immigrant families, low-income households, and historically underserved populations. These grassroots organizations are the core of AAPI ethnic enclaves, providing in-language and culturally competent essential services. These community centers are often trusted entry points for individuals as they acclimate to a new environment and find their place in their communities.
Our work will center on two Core Concepts:
Belonging: Fostering environments where individuals and families, regardless of their identity statuses, feel welcomed, supported, and equipped to build stability and connection. Through education and service partnerships, we affirm that thriving communities begin with trust, access, and opportunity.
Community Leadership: Cultivating and strengthening pathways for the next generation of AAPI leaders to help shape and serve their communities through informed civic engagement.
By focusing on these priorities, we aim to strengthen grassroots CBOsâ capacity to directly assist individuals and families in need. We invite our supporters to champion these organizations and join Project by Project in building resilient communities in action.
