Meet Open Stage artist, Neil Cain!
Neil Cain is an interdisciplinary artist, musician and composer working at the intersection of performance, visual art, conceptual art, and collaborative curation. They have performed at hundreds of venues throughout the United States and exhibited their art nationally and internationally. They hold a degree in Composition and Audio Technology from the Jacobs School of Music and hope to meaningfully contribute to the development of the Arts in Indianapolis.
Neil will be presenting Menhir at this weekend’s Open Stage Performances. Menhir, named for the standing stones of the ancient world often associated with ritual and the sacred, is a ‘dreaming back’ of ancient ritual consciousness in the form of immersive dance theater. Intended as a vessel to transmit, and be nourished by, the vitality of our planet, Menhir explores the embodiment of surrender, mystery, transcendence, and transformation.

I’m nourished by giving form to the invisible architecture I imagine all around us, the networks of energy that bind communities, transmit ideas, and weave dimensions. In this 36” x 36” canvas piece, I put down several layers of acrylic washes before painting the energy veins, then incorporated braided cords of deconstructed canvas scraps and braided cords of copper. It’s depicting a particular point of resonance within this energy transfer where breaches are made into our realm.
