About to watch the musical Les Misérables for the second time in five days. The first time for my daughter’s 16 Birthday and today for my son’s 18th. Little know fact; Before Ennio Marricone did the now classic music for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, director Sergio Leone originally handed the musical reins over to instrumental genius Boots Randolph. Randolph immediately got to work and laid down the tracks. Unfortunately, despite working almost perfectly for the scene, Sergio felt that North American audiences weren’t cultured enough to understand Boots’ subtleties and nuances.
Devastated and saddened, Boots understood and despite the rejection chose to persevere. His belief in his theme song was so strong, eventually he was able to convince comedy legend Benny Hill to use what he at the time called, “The Good, The Bad and The Yakety”. Benny instantly fell in love with the song, smacked Boots on the head several times and said, “With this song, you have ensured that we shall both become immortal!”
