Big weekend for Sink Or Swim at the @okanaganfilm awards winning Best Edit and Story in the Short Docs category. So much before and after the filming makes up a project like this one. Always nice to get the feedback we are heading in the right direction when taking risks on stories that aren’t the stereotypical in the outside space. More news on the Community Launch later this week. Excited for everyone to get eyes on this film this Spring.

Saw this little guy on my walk today in the Forest out back of my house in the Comox Valley. A Barred Owl is my guess. Followed Bohdi and I for a while. #owl #comoxvalley #vancouverisland

🔥 Speaker Spotlight: Patrick Lucas Taking the IGNITE Summit Powered by First Credit Union stage this April is Patrick Lucas. Patrick is an award-winning community planner and social entrepreneur whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, community development, and outdoor recreation. As the founder of the Indigenous Youth Mountain Bike & Trails Program, he has supported the development of recreation infrastructure and youth programming in dozens of First Nations communities across western Canada. Beyond his work in community development, Patrick is also an accomplished storyteller, writer, and filmmaker. His work has appeared at festivals including the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, World Storytelling Day, and the Flame Storytelling Series, and he has contributed to multiple docu-dramas and documentary films, including the Emmy-nominated Return to Earth series on Outside TV+ and Red Bull TV Global Broadcast. His keynote, “Harnessing the Transformative Power of Storytelling,” explores how the stories we tell — and the ones we inherit — shape our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and the opportunities available to us. Drawing on his experience as a social entrepreneur and storyteller, Patrick will share how narrative can bring people together, unlock economic and social development, and inspire meaningful change. You’ll learn how to: • Understand the profound impact storytelling has on individuals, communities, and culture • Recognize the narratives that shape how we see ourselves and the world around us • Listen deeply and better understand the stories others share with us • Unpack and analyze the stories we inherit from our culture and environment • Harness storytelling as a tool for personal, professional, and community transformation 🎟 Early Bird tickets are available until March 24 at 11:59 PM. Want to be in the room? Comment IGNITE for the ticket link!

Super exciting writing news. I started out dreaming of becoming a playwright. My first big project was a one act play I wrote in high school titled Train Wreck in a Playground. The opening monologue was published in an anthology but that’s as far it went. Have always wanted to try again. This past November, the Courtenay Little Theatre @courtenaylittletheatre here the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island put out a call for local writers to submit a proposal for a one act play that told local stories. I took a chance and sent in an idea that had been brewing in my head for the past several years. I was shocked to learn I was one of six writers invited to submit a full script. The CLT is working with Michael Armstrong, a van isle based playwright to review the script and they will select several to go forward to full production. An amazing initiative to support and help local writers develop their craft. Even if I don’t proceed to the next stage it’s already been an invaluable opportunity to learn and hone my skills. Soon, I’ll submit my script and wait to see what happens. My play, sub(Text) follows a hyper online, elder millennial couple who migrated from Vancouver to the valley just as the Covid 19 global pandemic shuts the world down. They are forced to hustle a rapidly changing online world just as their boomer parents show up on their doorstep, homeless and ready to blow up their social bubble. The story explores the dangers of living in dual realities, misinformation and conspiracy theories in the digital age and relearning the art of real life communication and family relationships. All ready to send it in for review. 🤞 #playwright #theatre #courtenaylittletheatre #comoxvalley #storyteller

One of the best parts of putting our stories in Dirt Relations out to the world has been to witness the impact, how the film has inspired dialogue and insights. That’s why we made the film, in the hope of inspiring and fostering meaningful conversations and action to foster reconciliation in outdoor recreation and adventure sports. We’ve been especially touched by some of the media coverage. This reel has just some of our favourite quotes. Dirt Relations is now available on YouTube at @freehubmag Pipeline. Link in bio.
