The Journey of Joya’s Abstract Expressionism – Ternocon 2025 by Patrick Lazol
A reflection of the past 10 months spent preparing for Ternocon 2025. My vision has always been to honor the terno—evolving it beyond its classic form, but without losing its essence. We explored new shapes, silhouettes, and materials, pushing boundaries without being overbearing. In the spirit of Joya’s Abstract Expressionism, we created a unique fabric from discarded scraps and everyday materials, guided by instinct and creativity.
Joining Ternocon, I knew this journey couldn’t be taken alone, and I didn’t want it to be. Chino and Aldwin, my unwavering partners in this, you are my right and left hands. Your presence means the world. You are my siblings.
To my angels, this is just a step. Losing is not failure—it’s growth. We gave our all and presented something exceptional. We’ve made history, creating a textile that’s entirely our own. Our time will come, and the world will see us. I couldn’t have done this without you—Carmela, Dale, Will, Teng, Ken, Anton, Rover, Kaye, and Chuck.
In parallel, I was also organizing the FIP Grad Show with Helen and Wilbur—thank you for your support. You know what’s up. 🙏🏻
To my family and my love, Ming—you’re my rock. You keep me grounded while giving me the freedom to dream big. The best is yet to come.
This is for my father, who allowed me to chase my dreams and live my purpose, undeterred by the opinions of others.
Working alongside Sir Inno Sotto, Sir Gino Gonzales, Sir Eric, Ms. Lulu, Sir Ezra, and Sir Rhett was one of the greatest honors of my life. The lessons and memories I carry from this experience are priceless.
Looking back on Ternocon 2025, I know I fulfilled my purpose: to showcase, to inspire, and, most importantly, to prove to myself that I can. For so long, I thought I was a failure, but not anymore. I gave it my all, heart and soul. I was given the space to dream, and now I will dream even bigger.
Dakal a salamat kekayu ngan!
This one’s for you, Jah. 🙏🏻 Till the next one.
