Tom Kohn’s @bopshoprecords is a destination. Mark Kaidy at @hifiloungeaudio specializes in turntable and hardware repair. And the relocation of Russ Torregiano’s eclectic @needledroprecords in late 2023 solidified the lineup.
Ahead of Record Store Day on April 12 — and the Rochester Record Fair, presented by Kaidy and Torregiano on April 27 — CITY visited the three shops.

Very proud of this one, especially the feature I wrote about families making art together. Spent time with the O’Brian brothers @mattobrian2026@guerilladubber and was proper chuffed to hear them lay down an impromptu cover of S.G. Goodman’s “Space and Time.” Matt started playing it on a nylon string, and Chris immediately joined in from behind his kit — despite having never heard the song before. Yes, @flyingobjectisaband and meeting two Rochester music legends was damn grand.
And then chatting with Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr — possibly the most charming and lovely married couple in the 585 — was equally jovial. Programming @chambermusicrochester as they raise two kids and perform in the RPO? Easy peasy. Some great BTS photos captured by @bertoscamera , who always captures and creates fully realized and vibrant scenes.

🚨🐀RATBOYS APPRECIATION POST🐀🚨
The new @ratboysband album, SINGIN’ TO AN EMPTY CHAIR, is out Friday. It absolutely rules. But more than that, it’s just awesome to see four of the best people in the biz getting their due. Julia, Dave, Sean and Marcus not only have the goods but they’re terrific folks as well.
I’ve been lucky enough to talk to them for almost every album they’ve released, starting in 2017 with GN. Julia and Dave told me about sending FB friend requests after Notre Dame orientation, jamming in the dorms, loving Wilco, sippin Genny Creams, etc. It was rare that I got to write two features on the same band for MTV News but I did it for Ratboys because they rule (and so does Printer’s Devil). Sean, who is also a great journalist, once interviewed me for a piece about @catatonicyouths . He let me interview him for a podcast that never got off the ground. Dave talked to me about Neil Young for my Substack. Nice people!
I knew their music was great but when “Black Earth, WI” dropped I lost my mind. The world needs more 10-minute guitar slammer jammers that unfold slowly. Best song in the world. They mailed me a VHS tape of the cool music video but I couldn’t play it (skill issue). And then The Window rightfully blew up and I watched them perform on TV with my daughter on my lap. Super surreal and so sick.
Last summer I got an email about writing the bio for this record (easiest yes of my life) which means I’ve been sitting with it for many months. It’s special! It’s beautiful! It rips! And the conversations with the four of them during the writing process were so fun and open and full of good energy. It all comes through so beautifully in the songs.
Congrats to the best crew in indie rock. As a wise man once said: “Let me thank the Ratboys for their music.”
