Basketball courts are sacred spaces. Almost anywhere you go in America you’re likely to find a hoop put up in a driveway, a church parking lot, schoolyard or some other corner of a neighborhood.
When I find one I like to think about who hung it. Did they make it themselves? Who for? It’s easy to imagine the excitement felt by a child or the pride of a parent as they finished putting it together. I wonder about what rivalries played out there in joy or pain. And the hours spent in fantasy while someone took shot after shot alone.
Every hoop I come across is at some point in its lifespan. A sun bleached backboard and a tattered gray net make me think of the time that’s gone, the kids grown up, and the parents that must be old now. By taking a photo of a basketball hoop on film I’m honoring the history of the dreaming done in that place that was important to someone, maybe many someones, maybe yesterday, maybe before I was born.
Dream Hoops is a collection of the more unusual and surreal hoops I’ve come across.
Ben Morey is a musician and photographer born and raised in the Finger Lakes. As a musician he’s toured the US and Europe playing original music. In 2019 he founded The @submarineschoolofmusic
He lives in Rochester NY with his wife Katie, their two daughters and their dog.
Yo! Friends! On January 24th I’m playing with @liamkazar at @abilenebarandlounge The first time I saw Liam was in 2018 in Chicago when he was in Daniel Johnston’s band. It was one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve been a big Liam fan ever since. It’s very special for me to get to share a bill with him. Hope you can make it!
