Framed through queer lives, this intimate portrait reminds us that community is not just about who you love—it's how we survive, together
UNTITLED KQT PROJECT 🇺🇸
by @patrickglee
—
Mini is a glam pageant queen turned nightlife mogul. Jungle is a rebellious artist learning to embrace her full femininity. Together, they create a sanctuary for Seoul’s queer performers—where self-expression becomes resistance, and joy becomes a form of protest. Through home-video intimacy and late-night vulnerability, we’re invited into a world shaped by interdependence, chosen kin, and radical welcome
“I would like to introduce my chosen family.”
UNTITLED KOREAN QUEER TRANS PROJECT is a feature documentary that’s been nearly a decade in the making. it feels so wild to me that we’re finally in the home stretch of finishing the film!
and when we do, my hope is that it feels like the queer-affirming family home video that so many queer and trans people of color – whether in our homeland or the diaspora – ache for but don’t have access to.
as traditional sources of arts funding fall victim to political whims (save public media!), our team is running a crowdfunding campaign so we can finish this film with the expertise and care it deserves.
[link in bio] for more on the story; our fabulous protagonists + creative crew; and ways you can support our efforts. (and pls DM me with ideas for the film’s title! :D)

This is an offering that Cecilia recorded in 2020. We were organizing a virtual Chuseok show during the first year of the pandemic.
Chuseok is a Korean holiday that marks the Harvest Moon. We wanted to celebrate it by inviting community members to share stories that honored their ancestors, that embodied our joy and our rage, and that showed us a way toward the abundance and liberation we were reaching for.
I’ve been listening to it on repeat, grateful to share in Cecilia’s love and care and laughter and spirit. It feels like a bedtime story for the ages; Cecilia tucking us in with a sly smile, making sure we’d dream of something hopeful and hilarious.
Cecilia, we will honor you eternally.
[the video shows Cecilia speaking and looking directly into the camera. her face and torso fill the frame, and as she speaks, she’s overflowing with smiles, vulnerability, and a sense of mischief. her long, wavy hair is mostly blonde with brown mixed in, and she’s wearing thick-rimmed black glasses. her black t-shirt features queer and trans inclusive gender symbols in white. she’s standing in front of a yellow wall, and English captions are displayed along the top of the video frame.]

my nibling’s extremely accurate portrait of me (and my emotional state) during 2022
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
[1: my four-year-old nibling holds up a painting-collage that she made. she’s beaming with pride for her creation and wearing a floral-patterned dress.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2: a closeup of the painting, which features two red-and-white striped candy canes and two dancer figures painted in yellow and pink, all against a blue background. snowflake cutouts and multicolored glitter are scattered throughout, along with cotton balls representing snow at the bottom.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3: a super closeup of one of the dancer figures, whose face is done up in yellow hair and black eyes and mouth. my nibling used a lot of water for the watercolor paints, resulting in the facial features melding together and evoking a sense of existential dread.]
queer koreans (plus my mom!) at queens pride this past weekend. (i told my mom we were going to “a parade” and she was like “ok sounds good” 😂)
[a photo of several people of korean descent standing together in the middle of the street, radiating smiles. jaewon is holding a sign that says “Stop Asian Hate, Let’s Say Gay”; pauline is wearing the korean flag draped around her neck; and my mom is wearing really cool leggings. buildings, storefronts, and trees are visible in the background against a cloudless blue sky.]
it’s been one year since the Atlanta spa shootings. @RedCanarySong is hosting a vigil tomorrow to remember the eight lives lost.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
they are bringing together speakers, music, and an art memorial created by Asian and migrant body care workers. our queer trans korean pungmul group will also be supporting.

via Red Canary Song: “Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the tragic Atlanta spa shootings.
An essential part of the care work we do at Red Canary is incorporating art, performance, and rituals in our grieving and collective resilience.
Massage workers in our community came together to create art pieces in remembrance of the lives lost. The second slide is an example of a painting that will be on display tomorrow. We will also showcase food cooked by beloved workers & part the curtain to parlors via an installation.
The vigil will close with a traditional Chinese funerary ritual lead by Empress Wu.
Music will be performed by KQT Pungmul - a Korean Queer & Trans Pungmul crew, who drum at actions in solidarity with Queer, Trans & GNC communities of color. Pungmul is a Korean folk ritual rooted from the traditions of farmers, their harvesting, their labor, & shamanic practices.
Lastly, we're honored to have Mel Hsu perform at the #8LivesVigil. Hsu is a sonic painter of impossible worlds.”
Jungle is someone very special to me. When we talk, she never fails to make me laugh and cry, usually both at the same time. (I just learned a Korean saying from Jungle — 울다가 웃으면 똥구멍에 털난다…if you laugh while crying then you’ll get a hairy butt 😂)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the years, she’s helped me build my own sense of home and belonging as a queer Korean bouncing between our homeland and the diaspora.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jungle is seeking support for her upcoming gender affirmation surgery. I’ll be matching donations up to $500 in total — if you can support in this way, please do and dm me a screenshot of your contribution, and I’ll follow up with the match. (Link to fundraiser in bio.) Help with spreading the word would also be much appreciated!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you for reading about my friend’s journey, and for supporting her from afar.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In gratitude,
Patrick

[1: a photo taken by @nikolaiahn of Jungle and Patrick at dinner, both wearing white-and-navy striped t-shirts, smiling and laughing. we both have shoulder-length hair, mine jet black and Jungle’s brilliant silver-white, and we’re about to dig into the delicious raw fish plated on the table in front of us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2: a screenshot of Jungle’s GoFundMe campaign, which features a photo of Jungle looking directly at camera, sporting long black hair with bangs, and wearing a skin tight greyish black top. text below the photo reads: “Fundraiser for Jungle's Gender Affirming Surgery.”]
hello hello! my close friend was flooded out of her basement home / work studio as hurricane ida struck nyc. we're fundraising to help her move to a new home and replace the work equipment that got destroyed (she is an amaze hair stylist who has made many a queer bipoc hair dream — including mine — come true!!).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
my ask: would you consider contributing what you can to our fundraiser? i'll be matching contributions up to $300!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
you can venmo me @ patrickglee, or you can donate directly to the GoFundMe (link in bio) and send me a screenshot. i'll send back a receipt of my matching amount :)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
thank you thank you thank you

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Over 40 people in our region have lost their lives. Countless others are now houseless and completely starting over after losing everything from flood damage. Due to the nature of basement flooding, vulnerable immigrants and BIPOC New Yorkers have again borne the brunt of our most recent crisis.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Immediate needs are of those who are houseless, unstably housed, people living in basement apartments, those facing eviction, immigrant New Yorkers who do not speak English, disabled New Yorkers, LGBTQ homeless youth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mutual aid networks, community-based organizations, & district elected offices are working to support New Yorkers devastated by Hurricane Ida.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A lot of people have asked where they can lend support. Here's a noncomprehensive list of groups doing Ida response work.
